APPLEBAUM: I live in Poland. I've lived here on and off for 30 years. I was here during period of NATO expansion.

I can tell you that NATO expanded because countries in this part of Europe felt physically threatened by Russia.

They asked to be part of NATO, they even had to beg and plead to be let in. Initially, United States was very reluctant.

NATO expansion was done all the way through with Russian participation and acknowledgment.

Initially, there was even a NATO-Russia partnership that was created.

There were constant attempts to show Russia that it was a defensive alliance and not an offensive one.

At one point, there were almost no American tanks left in Europe. There was no arming of countries in Eastern Europe, and that happened only after 2014.

So a lot of effort was made to create NATO as a security zone, as a zone of peace, and not focus it on some kind of attack on Russia.

For quite a long time, Putin accepted this. There have been recent releases of documents from '90s in which he doesn't talk about NATO, or complaining about NATO expansion.

That was a later argument he began to make down the road when he needed a casus belli, explanation for why he was invading Ukraine.

So, Russia successfully sold a very false story about the war being somehow provoked by NATO.

Islamic Republic in Iran hangs 24-Year-old woman who defended herself from sexual assault

Yesterday the regime executed Marziyeh Neyri yesterday, a young woman who was forced into marriage at age 17 and hanged for fighting back against her attacker.

Marziyeh was 18 years old when her husband's associate attempted to sexually assault her in her own home, in front of her husband. She grabbed a kitchen knife to defend herself. Her husband died in the struggle.

She told the court she had been repeatedly assaulted by her husband's associates before that day. Iran's courts didn't care.

The regime rejected her self-defense claim. Her attacker, who survived, took the stand and called her a murderer. The court believed him over her.

She was sentenced to death.

No clemency. No mercy. The sentence was carried out at Chubindar Prison in Qazvin.

Marziyeh Neyri never had a chance. Forced into marriage as a child under Iran's Islamic laws, she spent the few years of her adult life in a courtroom, fighting for her life after defending it.

She lost.

This is the Sharia Laws in Islamic Republic of Iran where a woman can be hanged for surviving.

I’ve been following this series, but I found @marci_shore ‘s glib linkage of Zionism to Polish and Romanian fascist movements in poor taste and historically misleading. Zionism was never simply a right-wing movement; it contained socialist, labor, liberal, religious, and revisionist currents, and Herzl’s conclusions about assimilation arose specifically from his confrontation with European antisemitism.

I respect her late colleague’s reversal on Zionism, but placing that anecdote immediately after Herzl, within this particular discussion of nationalism and fascism, and then concluding that these were all “right-wing examples” gave Jewish national self-determination a uniquely right-wing and sinister framing.

Had Palestinian nationalism also entered the discussion particularly given Shore’s own discussion of the Romanian “death cult” and the obvious comparative questions around martyrdom, nationalism, and political violence it would at least have made the analytical category nationalism rather than implicitly making Zionism itself the pathology. Whatever Shore’s personal views on Zionism, I found the framing irresponsible.

One of my absolute favorite things to watch is Arabs ranking their so-called “struggles” in the exact same category as the pure hell Black people have endured for centuries.

The announcement by Prime Minister Netanyahu that Israel rejects President Trump’s 15-point plan for the disarmament of Hamas and the demilitarization of Gaza offers no substantive or specific critiques beyond what has already been communicated and agreed upon in the adjusted framework for the proposal; meaning that this statement is little more than an exercise in public relations and messaging meant for an Israeli audience getting ready for a consequential election, rather than an actual position shift or refusal to proceed. The Board of Peace’s executive director, Nickolay Mladenov, already met with Netanyahu last week and came out with a modified framework that incorporates Israel’s objections and conditions that the Prime Minister spoke about for supposedly rejecting the deal today

The updated framework already reflects Netanyahu’s conditions: Israel will not withdraw to the “Yellow Line” or to Gaza’s borders until Hamas, PIJ, and the major clans are fully and verifiably disarmed. The distinction between heavy and light weapons was removed, and the idea of “storing” weapons for Hamas was not even mentioned in the first place. Israel would ultimately withdraw from Gaza while leaving behind delegitimized, decapitated, disarmed, and hollowed-out remnants of an organization that cannot pose a threat to the Jewish state. The deal on the table is precisely what Netanyahu claims he is pursuing. So yes, his statement today is hollow, meaningless, and reeks of a politician posturing as a tough man to make up for his catastrophic track record that includes helping entrench Hamas’s rule and presiding over the worst single-day security failure in Israel’s history.

Meanwhile, reporting from Israel indicates that, to set the stage for implementation, the IDF has paused targeted assassinations of Hamas and other October 7 perpetrators, with any future strikes requiring approval from Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir. Netanyahu and Defense Minister Katz have also approved a pilot residential community in Rafah beyond the “Yellow Line,” enabling construction in the Israeli‑controlled section of Gaza. The Board of Peace also just issued a contract tender to build a base for housing International Stabilization Force (ISF) peacekeepers inside Gaza. These steps suggest a movement, however slow, toward the implementation of the disarmament proposal.

The plan, while difficult, messy, uncertain, and vulnerable to disruption, remains the only viable path to reducing Hamas’s finite arsenal and opening space for a transitional process after nearly three years of war. Netanyahu cannot meaningfully reject a proposal that already reflects his demands and that President Trump is investing significant political capital to advance.
