Many in the Australian startup ecosystem have spent years lobbying the Australian Government to work with industry to improve access to the venture asset class. A vibrant angel ecosystem gives startups and founders the opportunity to bring innovation to market. Improving access also improves diversity of investors, resulting in more women founders receiving early stage funding. This would be a disappointing move in the opposite direction. Yes retail investors need protections and we need regulation to stop predatory behaviour in the cap raising market, but a blanket increase to the income/asset rule will have a significant, negative impact on early stage venture in Australia. @techcouncil_aus would love to understand your views on this article
One more time for the government: having a lot of money does not make you sophisticated (usually the opposite in my experiences!).
Do what you do for any other educational pursuit, and come up with a test!
This change will have a very chilling effect on the angel investment landscape and hurts founders.
There is a balance to be struck and retail investors should have protections - but simply increasing the financial thresholds is a stupid way to do it.

Labour wants to raise the income threshold for wholesale investors status to $450,000, so I guess only .01% of Australians (almost exclusively men) should be able to access these assets? https://t.co/KYncZPnRDA
