@RealGayArbys@pickle_juice29 @sophsoph_psd Amazing work, you should be super proud of yourselves!
May we include your toolkit in the masking and DIY advocacy resources list we've begun curating?
Our goal is to get more of these billboards up as soon as we can! You can help us make it happen! Let's spread the word together: https://t.co/5NH88sBIww
With the help of @pickle_juice29, I made a guide to replicating this project in your city. Our toolkit
(https://t.co/5NH88sBIww) has fundraising tips, vendor ideas, & more! And our artist, @sophsoph_psd, has made her design open source (https://t.co/Tk9VrLmNCd) so you can use it

The NYC Comptroller may not know how to check for a faintly positive RAT, but I'm gonna make sure you do.
1. Photo with flash (washes out erratic glares).
2. Zoom in.
3. Tilt phone away (alters contrast to eyes).
4. Play with contrast/exposure.
5. Try grayscale to even out hues.
Important teaching moment here: A faint line on a test is still positive, meaning you can still spread COVID. This is why wearing a mask is a key layer of protection, esp if you are recovering. You may be contagious when you don't think you are, and a mask helps mitigate that.
I've had a couple of weeks with the two IKEA air quality monitors, and I want to share some of my thoughts.
Before diving in, however, I want to mention that whatever my thoughts on the devices, I am pleased to see air quality monitors on the shelves (virtual or otherwise) of big retailers such as IKEA and Amazon. This is a great step forward and shows an increasing awareness of indoor air quality. Furthermore, the prices on these monitors are quickly dropping, making them more accessible for everyone - something that I see as another great step forward.
My full Vindstyrka (the $49 monitor) review will be published soon. Until then, here is what I think:
Vindriktning ($14.99): Unfortunately, this device isn't worth it - even at such a low price. It's inaccurate, and since it only displays three different air quality levels (green, yellow and red - like a traffic light), it's not particularly useful. This issue is exacerbated, considering it needs to be more accurate to begin with.
Accuracy report: https://t.co/WT1JlLooAN
That said, the Airgradient article shows that the device picks up trends in PM2.5 concentrations; it just severely underreports them. This device could be a fantastic and inexpensive option with an update to account for this underreporting and a very simple screen that shows concentrations rather than an LED. I love the concept of making air quality monitoring inexpensive, and a second version of this device with these two changes could be fantastic - even if they need to increase the price to $20 or $25.
Vindstyrka ($49.99): This is a far more promising device. It uses a Sensirion SEN54 sensor, which has good accuracy and has been proven by third-party reports and studies to perform within its stated accuracy. The sensor alone costs $30, and while IKEA would've had wholesale discounts, it's great to see such a good sensor in an inexpensive device.
My biggest issue with this device is the tVOC scale, which uses only three arrows to show increasing, stable or decreasing tVOC levels instead of an actual concentration. While this might have been decided because the SEN54 is only accurate to ±15% m.v. with VOCs, I would still have loved to have seen a number value.
Secondly, the three colours which represent PM2.5 are very misleading. The colours represent the PM2.5 concentration as follows:
- Green: 0-35μg/m3
- Yellow: 35-120μg/m3
- Red: 120μg/m3 +
The issue? The WHO states the average 24-hour exposure to PM2.5 should not exceed 25 μg/m3. On the Vindstyrka, this is still considered 'good' (green). Luckily, a number is also displayed, and I recommend referring to this instead.
Besides these two issues, this is a great option at the price. There are few alternatives, and the Vindstyrka both looks good and performs well. It even has connectivity (but you can't access VOC data)!
Have you tried either of these monitors? I would be curious to hear your thoughts!
Collective's first fundraiser alert!
Mask Bloc Bordeaux are raising €130 to resupply on masks of assorted colors to distribute for free to their community members.
The campaign even comes with prizes! Please RT and contribute what you can to support their essential efforts!

Thanks to your donations so far we were able to purchase 100 kids size KF94s! We still need another $60 to meet our goal for more adult size N95s and bags to distribute them.

Quick Note:
Sorry we've been away!
Our team (again, very small) experienced an unfortunately simultaneous series of minor to moderate personal crises in our respective lives.
We appreciate your patience as we work to catch up on correspondence, map updates, and more.
