本日9月6日(日)は開館日です。

今朝は断続的な強風が吹いています。
雨は降りそうで降っていません。

「華宵のまなざしをたどる展　
　ーひとりの画家の内なる風景ー」
好評開催中です。

久しぶりに挿絵原画を展示しています。
2024年に収蔵した7点です。

いずれも『少女画報』という雑誌に
掲載されていたもので、
華宵の人気最盛期に描かれた挿絵原画です。

細密で流麗な線描によって、
写実的で美しい人物が描かれています。

華宵の原画は、
華宵自身が生涯に描いた作品数に比して、
それほど残っていません。
実業之日本社に描いたものの一部は、
東京にある弥生美術館が収蔵していますが、
講談社や東京社、金の船社、成海社、婦女界社など、
華宵が挿絵を手がけた多くの雑誌の原画は、
破棄されたか行方不明です。

当時は画家が出版社に渡した原画は、
そのまま出版社に残され、
一部は読者プレゼントとして利用されたり、
編集者が持ち帰ったりなどしていました。

華宵自身もそれほど原画に執着していなかったのか、
手元に原画は残っていませんでした。

それにしても華宵さん、本当に絵が上手いです!!!
この密度の作品を、大正末から昭和初期にかけては、
毎月100枚以上描いていたのですから、
改めて華宵の凄さを感じます。

華宵芸術の魅力が凝縮された挿絵原画を、
じっくりとご覧ください。

次の開館日は9月12日(土)、13日(日)です。

It looks as though it might rain, but so far, it has held off.

Our exhibition,
“Tracing Kasho’s Gaze:
The Inner Landscape of an Artist,”
is currently on view.

For the first time in a while, we are exhibiting original illustrations by Kasho—seven works that entered our collection in 2024.

All seven originally appeared in the magazine Shojo Gaho (Girls’ Pictorial) and were created at the height of Kasho’s popularity.

With his exquisitely detailed and flowing lines, Kasho depicted his figures with remarkable realism and beauty.

Considering the enormous number of works Kasho produced during his lifetime, relatively few of his original illustrations survive today.

Some of the works he created for Jitsugyo no Nihon Sha are now in the collection of the Yayoi Museum in Tokyo. However, the original illustrations he produced for many other publishers—including Kodansha, Tokyo-sha, Kin no Fune-sha, Seikai-sha, and Fujokai-sha—were either discarded or have since disappeared.

At the time, artists generally handed their original illustrations over to publishers, where they remained after publication. Some were later given away as prizes to readers, while others were taken home by editors.

Kasho himself may not have been particularly attached to his original drawings, either, as virtually none remained in his possession.

And yet, looking at these works again, one cannot help but think: Kasho really was an extraordinarily skilled artist!

From the late Taisho through the early Showa period, he was producing more than 100 illustrations every month. Seeing the extraordinary detail in these originals makes his achievement all the more astonishing.

We hope you will take your time and enjoy these original illustrations, in which the essence of Kasho’s art can be seen so vividly.
