The instrument we know as a Marimba in the west was not originally oriented like a piano, but instead was a solid plank of notes laid out in order, more akin to frets on a guitar, and didn't always have half steps.
I feel like the point has been lost. Originally it seems like it was used to explain commonalities between pieces of an era and genre, then composers could use them as a framework to go by.
Question: What's the point of music theory? What is it *for*? I'm especially interested in the answers from folks who consider themselves music theorists but definitely want to hear from others as well!

Fun idea: why don't we all post a quote from our WIP or published novels? Just one sentence, does not have to be amazing, could be dialogue or a transition. I just think it would be fun to see the different styles of writing

@12tonevideos do you ever want to analyze a song but find it incredibly difficult because the song is so heavy? Not necessarily the instrumentation, chords, or the lyrics, but the emotions it brings to you? I find that happens every time I try to analyze Blackstar by David Bowie.
