another important turtle paper by @WsVincentChan now out, this one in Wildlife Letters - Movement and space use patterns of the Beale's Eyed Turtle suggest sensitivity to environmental changes and poaching https://t.co/P18lor1hTE
Thrilled to share my first first-authored article published in Wildlife Letters! 🐢
We examine the movement ecology of the endangered Beale's eyed turtle and how this matters to their survival in a human-altered landscape.

On @guardian today to talk about the politics of the tragic fire in Hong Kong. The deputy head of the HKSAR Gov faced huge backlash after suggesting to ban bamboo scaffolding. It is a blunt attempt to spin away the real fuel of the fire: Illegal mesh wrapping and styrofoam boards that block windows. Also, the civil society-led mutual-aid network is way more efficient than the GONGOs. Most of the shelters rely on volunteers to run, and coordinate using messaging apps and web apps that's built within a few hours.
The fire exposes the city's dysfunctional governance, with bloods on Lee cabinet's hands.

(1/11) I oppose any hasty government move to abandon bamboo scaffolding, a proven, resilient, and cost-effective engineering system that has served Hong Kong’s high-rise and complex urban environment for decades. #HongKongFire
And here is why:
Excited about this great paper on using stable isotope analysis to fight illegal trade! 🐢 It highlights how we can distinguish wild from captive freshwater turtles. Happy to have contributed to this important work.

New Paper! We highlighted a loophole in Chinese wildlife regulations. For many species, only wild specimens are regulated for trade, providing opportunities for wildlife laundering. Hopefully, regulatory changes will happen soon to rectify this loophole. https://t.co/hIlnMa2fVn

Unfortunately my office and colleagues don’t use twitter / X too much. The post here still captures so well on what is going to happen in our globally important wetland. 😞 😢 😔 sad!
Join us this Wed on Variety Hour! Excited to chat to you about our open-source, low cost accelerometer and how it helped transform our understanding toward the life history pattern of a critically endangered freshwater turtle species 🐢

On my flight back to Hong Kong after disruption caused by typhoon. So happy to have my first conference at #BESMove2023. Showcasing my accelerometer works on 🐢 (a big shoutout to Brian for this). Enjoyed a lot with many great talks. And met many like minded with good advices.

Thanks all for coming to St Andrews and for your inspiring presentations and posters 🤓
We wish you a safe journey home 🏡

Animals affect humans in many different ways. The #COVID19 lockdowns showed there are a huge variety of data on human activity. @Diego_EllisSoto and Ruth Oliver led a new paper that shows how we might put it all together into a dynamic human footprint https://t.co/9SodJq8eZJ
I have some #SnapperGPS turtle tracking tags left over 🐢🛰️
Message me if you have a project this year where a small number of such tags may be useful.
⚠️ Warning: they don't transmit data live; so, need to be recovered to access any data, which is quite labour intensive.
