Lessons from a Warrior

I had the honor to serve with and learn from NCOs like SSG Christopher Waiters. Chris left the safety of cover and ran through a hail of fire to save his soldiers. What he did wasn't a momentary reflex— it was an unrelenting series of actions that saved lives. He flipped the bird to our enemies and showed them the courage of the American soldier! He should have been promoted to the top— but men who never deployed determined his promotion and career progression 🙄

Here is the public account of his heroic actions!

"On the morning of April 5, 2007, an insurgent improvised explosive device (IED) struck a Bradley Fighting Vehicle, immediately engulfing it and its crew in flames. Waiters, then a Specialist and the company’s senior line medic, responded immediately.
•The Rescue: Arriving at the scene while under fierce small-arms fire, Waiters engaged the insurgents and sprinted roughly 80 meters alone to the blazing vehicle. Despite intense heat and smoke, he pulled the dazed driver and vehicle commander to safety.
•Re-entering the Fire: After getting the first two soldiers to his Stryker, Waiters learned a third crewman was still trapped inside the burning wreckage. He repeatedly ran back into the line of fire and into the flaming troop compartment, braving exploding 25mm ammunition to search for his fallen comrade."
