In 2016, my wife and I jumped into house flipping, and I did most of the work myself—demo, flooring, drywall, painting, you name it. I had been researching real estate investing for a while and had very minor construction experience in the past. After some well-timed convincing, my wife went all in with me. I’m incredibly grateful for that because this journey wouldn’t have been the same without her.
We learned by doing, made plenty of mistakes, and figured things out along the way. Over time, I built a strong team of contractors, but I still GC every project and stay hands-on.
Since then, while I worked a full-time W-2 job, we’ve flipped over $5M in single-family homes, I earned my builder’s license in 2023, and became a licensed real estate agent to give us more flexibility in buying and selling properties. Now, we are shifting our focus to something bigger: building affordable homes.
Over the last few decades, the average home size has skyrocketed, while family sizes have shrunk—it honestly doesn’t make much sense. The market desperately needs practical, well-built, and affordable homes, yet they’re severely lacking in new construction. My goal is simple: help more people become homeowners without breaking the bank.
Right now, I’m building two 3-bedroom, 1-bathroom, ~900 sq. ft. ranch spec homes, and this is just the beginning of our home-building journey. My focus is on homes between 800-1,500 sq. ft.—the perfect size for small families, singles, and anyone looking for home ownership without the massive price tag of most homes on the market today.
If I’ve learned anything in life, it’s this: Have a defined "why". Take action. Be persistent. Keep your momentum going. You don’t need all the answers—just start moving and figure it out along the way. Experience is your best teacher.
Follow along as I build, flip, and work to bring affordable housing back to Southeast Michigan!
🏡💪 Build Affordable Housing Again.
@CollinJHumphrey The shower one is sweet. It almost looks like the shower is literally installed behind the cab with the side doors being the glass doors
@BowTiedBroke I was in gaitlingburg recently and we stayed up in one of the cabins on ober mountain. I was really curious how material trucks, concrete trucks, etc get up those wild roads to build those houses. Just more trips, smaller trucks, smaller loads?
@TannerBuilds Agree 100%. I'm not sure when it became a thing that everyone needed to know about each other's political viewpoints. Keep doing your thing without it.
@TannerBuilds I did a very similar color scheme on one of my builds, blue siding, white trim, black gutters, black roof and cedar posts. Looks great! Love the large porch in that price range
@TannerBuilds Funny thing this was fully approved by the city 😀😂...last I heard though is at he was like a foot into the setback and somebody was complaining about it
Last I checked this has been out of style for like 6 years and even when the fad was in style I always wondered why. Grey is a bad look in basically all finish materials. The only thing I can think of is they got a heck of a deal on the flooring, and even with that, still bad choice.
