7 Things Learnt from Everton 0–2 Chelsea | by Sayo Aluko

1] This should count as our win of wins so far this season. It’s always tricky against Everton away, and this one lived up to expectations in terms of testing us in every department. And we passed. This is the kind of win that adds oomph to the possibility of a title charge for this squad.

2] Before I get to the starry highlights, I need to talk up Josh Acheampong. If we achieve any trophy success this season, it will track back, in no small measure, to the composed efficiency this boy is increasingly delivering from game to game. He is playing with the composure of a veteran at just 20 years old. He is very key, and boy, it is obvious. [Hato also gets a mention in this light for today].

3] Pedro Neto. What do you want me to say? Praise him? Abeg, you’ll have to wait until we win the league to get that from me. 😅 However, we should thank Mr. Work Rate for delivering the spoils today. He has been a different horse this season as a wing back [thanks to better player-profiling]; I give him that. But his fans cannot gaslight me into Neto amnesia. Those dark days of work-rate-without-brain-rate are as recent as a blink. So, let him keep doing this beta-version Neto CONSISTENTLY, and maybe, just maybe, we’ll add his name back into the Book of Life.

4] Another obvious factor already proving key to our potential dominance is this Henderson x Caicedo pivot. It’s like watching a veteran general fighting alongside a young warhorse. Henderson sees the traps, knows when to hold the line and understands the rhythm of a contest. Caicedo has the appetite to press, chase, tackle and overwhelm. Hendo supplies the wisdom; Caicedo supplies the warfare. And it’s about them just as much as it is about the system they represent: a perfect combination of age [experience] and youth [vigour]; because the same efficiency was evident when it became Hendo x Lavia.

5] If we go on to win things this season, the 2026 summer transfer window will go down as one of the best in our history. Because, really, who could have predicted that getting 36-year-old Henderson on a free transfer would mean watching him play such a key role in our midfield, take almost all our set pieces, assist, score golazos and play 90 minutes? Today, he covered more distance [12.2 km] than any other player on that pitch, all while playing with one arm! Even crystal balls can't see that. But apparently, Xabi did.

6] RPJ had a solid game too, even without registering their customary goals and assists. Joao was sissying a bit by hugging the turf after every Tarkowski tackle; still, he served up the threat expected of him. I might be wrong, but part of me wants to see a more physical Rogers; he's currently leaning heavily on finesse, and that’s fine because it works. Today, though, I was looking out for a more defensively certain version of him when Everton upped their aggression. His hold-up play is unparalleled by the way. You can't take the ball off him. Palmer? Very satisfied with him and his more physical approach to games.

7] We got our first clean sheet since January, and we needed two goalkeepers to earn it. I’ll take it! 💪 I’m quite convinced we’ve sorted out our goalie problems.
