NEW FROM THE AFRICA DESK!
Despots of the Dark Continent: Gaddafi, Abacha, Amin and the Western Propaganda Machine
“He may be a son of a bitch, but he’s our son of a bitch.”
- U.S. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR).
This is the single unbroken rule of Western engagement with African leadership.
This principle applies as much to African heads of state as it does to the powers that back them. Steal for the West, and you become an “astute politician.” Steal from them, or worse, steal for your country, and you become a monster in need of removal.
Perhaps looking at history from a non-Anglo perspective cleans up the scratches on its lens, making reality much simpler yet complex, allowing us to revisit the myth of Amin, Abacha, and Gaddafi through the looking glass of time. They were men who believed their countries should not be permanent economic colonies, who acted on that belief, and who were destroyed by a machinery of narrative control so sophisticated it could turn debt repayment into theft and social programs into tyranny.
This is not a defense of these flawed leaders; after all, they are humans. It is a reclamation of context from those who weaponize it selectively. We have seen Sani Abacha pay down Nigeria’s debt and earn sanctions and the word “kleptocrat” for his trouble and seen Muammar Gaddafi build social programs that would embarrass Scandinavia and die sodomized in a ditch on the streets of Libya. Libya’s literacy rate rose from around 10–25 percent before his rule to over 80–90 percent by the 2000s, supported by free education, free healthcare, and extensive welfare programs that gave Libya one of the highest human development indicators in Africa.
In this article, we move through Idi Amin, Sani Abacha, and Muammar Gaddafi as case studies of how sovereignty is turned into “despotism” on Western screens; explore the architecture that makes it work; and finally, we return to the question of African sovereignty and who gets to tell the story of these so‑called “monsters.”
The West does not fear African “cruelty”; it fears African sovereignty. This is an examination of the three men who said no and the propaganda machine that turned their defiance into monstrosity.....
WE WILL NOT BE SILENCED!!!!
Yesterday, our colleague and DD Geopolitics correspondent Chris was told that the US government has placed him on the FBI's no-fly list while trying to board a flight in Beijing.
He is an American citizen. He received no warning, no charge, and no reason. He found out only when the airline refused to issue his boarding pass after eight hours of waiting, stranding him abroad. As an American, he is now barred from flying to, from, or even over his own country.
His "offense" is journalism.
Chris was traveling to cover Iran's national team at the World Cup. In recent months he reported on the ground from Minab in southern Iran and from the site of the Starobelsk strike in the Donbass, where a dormitory full of teenagers was killed. His work documents the human cost of the wars Washington funds and fights: the children who never make the press releases.
For that, an American citizen has been placed on a terrorism watchlist with no due process and no explanation.
This is not a small thing. The no-fly list operates with almost no transparency, Americans are routinely listed without ever being told why, and the redress process is a black box that a federal court has already found violates constitutional due process. It is one of the most powerful quiet censorship tools the government holds, and it is now pointed at a journalist for reporting things they would rather no one see.
DD Geopolitics will not be silenced. We are pursuing every legal avenue available to Chris, and we will not let this be buried.
If they can do this to him with no warrant, no charge, and not one word of explanation, they can do it to any American who shows the world something it isn't supposed to see.

The announcement that @Ripple and @Bitso are launching the MXNB Mexican peso stablecoin natively on the XRPL alongside $RLUSD is an absolute game-changer. This isn't just about the U.S.–Mexico corridor; it is a masterclass blueprint for how the rest of Latin America adopts blockchain.
