The best thing for improving game skills is (yes, practice, but also) identifying areas one can improve. Our performance assessment was more of a sheet for my aunt to gauge her own progress. She also played some games and we discussed the replays.

We continued developing our understanding of the new season's content (map, weapons, NPCs, etc.) and practiced within that context. When it comes to assessment, we're focused on self-identifying points of improvement (currently basic game skills).

Fortnite had a season update recently that completely changed how it's played. While the fundamental skills are still applicable, there's a lot of new game knowledge. So...my learner and I and worked on figuring out everything new (e.g. crafting).

This week we expanded the strategic conversation. Moving beyond the game's design (last week's focus), we considered how other players behave. For example, where can you expect more technically-skilled players to be and how is it best to fight them?

Today (well, yesterday now), we went over game sense. More specifically, we worked on managing the ever-shrinking safe zone, using high positions for tactical advantage, and what to hold in the inventory based on the current situation.

Since it has been some time since last session, yesterday we refreshed her building skills for a bit before moving on to becoming comfortable with swapping between weapons and builds. My hope is this will benefit her adaptability and reaction speed.

Because building (and doing so efficiently), is a complex motor skill, we practised more this week to further ingrain the muscle memory. Learning this relies more on repetition than it does on intellectual comprehension, so that's what we're doing!

My aunt wanted to continue developing her Fortnite skills instead of moving on to another game, so we spent today working on basic building and switching mechanics. Extra familiarity with the buttons definitely improves speed of completing tasks.

We decided on a place to land and practiced looting it for a bit. After some time, I decided a real game would be better (giving a sense of pace to the match, and/or quicker practice).

Lo and behold, with a bit of guidance, she won her first game:

My aunt wanted to learn Fortnite, so I gave her two options. We could develop some transferable skills via other games, or start to learn the skills directly.

She chose the latter, so we're starting with basic inputs (i.e. aiming) in practice maps. @YEPeducation #LetsTeachAdults

@DianaConforti5 @YEPeducation It's a good idea to flip the script and have your learner assemble the lesson for you. It means they get practice applying the knowledge they've learned. I hope the routine was safe, challenging and rewarding!

@VivienneS13 @YEPeducation Great skill! That definitely saves a lot of time. While my learner probably does have the ability to bank online, I don't think they know their account information, so cheques are still something they use. Good for your learner!

@_noteable @YEPeducation It's awesome that one of those pieces was a duet. I like that it forces going beyond just playing a song and making sure you coordinate with your partner. I hope that was a wonderful bonding moment!

Since we completed our goal last week, for this final session we did a "speedrun" (...actually 2.5 hours), to consolidate the tune-making process and create a completely new one!

@VardiYeganeh @YEPeducation How easy was it to sight-read (in both the notes and their duration)? Will he be selecting two pieces that you have previously worked on or are you expecting him to find his own songs for his upcoming concert? I hope everything goes well!

@_KaitySong @YEPeducation If I might ask, what scenery did you copy? What kinds of colours do you plan to use when painting it? I hope you had a fun experience sketching and that the painting works out well!
