This. Called the speaker a "coloured person," caught himself and then went on to refer to "coloured students." And no one immediately called that out in the moment. This is how far back we're starting. Cool.
So let's just be clear about something as we listen to tonight's @VSB39 meeting. The SLO program is not the same as the VPD Cadet program. Not that I support the cadet program either but they are different programs. It is not the cadet program that is up for review. #VSB39
Interesting in listening to the positive stories about #VSB39 SLOs. Sounds like the speakers want their positive experiences to be valued more than the stories of harm of others. I guess that's one way to make choices for the collective good...hope @VSB39 trustees don't agree.
Watch @VSB39 Special Board mtg to hear from the public re: SLO program review. 23 delegates in total. No surprise, VPD has sent 3 people to speak. We don't need to hear violent institutions justify their existence in our schools. #copaganda https://t.co/UPCATDEYYU
Hey Constables! Why do you think people have 'negative' and traumatic interactions and experiences with police? At least they are being upfront that the SLO program is a perfect opportunity to recruit youth into policing. #copaganda
@kylaepstein speaking truth. Reminding trustees to not make a decision based on the personalities of individual SLOs. Is the program truly for ALL students?! Urging to invest alternative programming that doesn't perpetrate systems of oppressions
Jamie Smallboy, Indigenous mother poses critical questions: what are you grooming our children to be? What cycles of oppression are you helping perpetuate? 'My children's lives , and mine are often in the margins and unseen'. Sharing painful violent lived experience with police.
Nish Thaver, does not hold back: is there a certain number of students need to be harmed by the SLO program before trustees will take action? Where is our imagination to decolonize education? Demands that any reform considerations is business as usual. That is NOT antiracism!
Richard Smallboy: VSB student alumni shares the importance of restorative justice grounded in community. Smallboy reports he was harassed by the SLOs on a daily basis leading to dropping out of school. Heartbreaking the treatment of his younger brother who was brutalized by SLOs
Smallboy: SLOs creates direct links between systems between systems learning and criminal justice systems. This is the school to prison pipeline. Cites 3 Indigenous organizations that should have been hired rather than Argyle. Community care programs are critical to support BIPOC
Dismantling the school-to-prison pipeline is a must, a necessary initial step is #PoliceFreeSchools
Transformative, healthy, equitable #PoliceFreeSchoolsCAWide is a human right!
Ther Sita: again calling that direction must be taken from Black and Indigenous students! Remove the term 'centered' if thats not your intention. It's on your conscience @VSB39 trustees, have a spine and stand up!
Erin Peters: children have the right to safety! Are police actually the best trained to provide these services? Citing school districts across the country have set precedence.
Take bold leadership @VSB39
Trixie, VSB student: "when a relationship gets abusive, you need to walk away from it. That's how BIPOC people feel about the police, the time to compromise is over"
She also cited the recent violent assault on @BraidedWarriors@VSB39 your political can stop the abuse.
What is problematic with data research & corporations or even within academia, is when researchers choose to take a "neutral & objective stance", it always perpetuates the status-quo/dominant/colonial/violent realities & there is no accountability #PoliceFreeSchoolsCAWide
Nancy Trigueros shares her expertise on how racialized students on the ASD spectrum experience the presence of police in their schools "We need to see through their lens." It's not about OUR false sense of security. "Let schools TRULY be their safe spaces"
