The proposed 2026 DfT changes do not require older cars to meet modern Euro 6/7 standards or reproduce their original type-approval emissions test at every MOT. A vehicle must broadly remain compliant with the emissions standard under which it was originally approved.

The MOT itself is much simpler: petrol cars are tested for CO, hydrocarbons and lambda, while diesels primarily undergo a smoke-opacity test plus inspection of emissions equipment. It cannot comprehensively establish original Euro-standard compliance.

The proposals are therefore principally aimed at deliberate tampering—DPF removal, EGR or AdBlue/SCR deletion, catalyst removal and associated ECU modifications—not normal ageing.

This distinction also makes engineering sense. Modern engines integrate EGR, turbo, injection, DPF and SCR within one calibration. Removing components changes back-pressure, combustion temperature, regeneration and fuelling and often requires deliberate ECU recalibration, potentially affecting durability. Conversely, natural DPF/EGR deterioration can increase emissions without deliberate tampering.

So saying “old cars must meet new-car emissions at MOT” is misleading.

Dear @waitrose, I've just tried to replace my worn out 'bag-for-life' only to be told that was no longer something you do. No apology, no alternative suggested. I bought the bag under the agreement it would be replaced, as stated on the bag. Seems like a breach of contract to me.
