Director General for Middle East, Asia and Pacific Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Dewano Kedir, today received a multinational delegation from India’s National Defence College, led by Major General Pawanpal Singh, Senior Directing Staff, as part of its study visit to Ethiopia.

Welcoming the delegation, Ambassador Dewano underscored the longstanding historical bonds and steadily expanding diplomatic ties between Ethiopia and India. He highlighted the two countries’ growing strategic partnership, particularly in the areas of trade and investment, and noted the significant contribution of Indian investors to Ethiopia’s economy. He also highlighted the strong and longstanding cooperation between the two countries in the defence sector.

The delegation noted that its members from India, Tanzania, Bangladesh, Germany, Myanmar, and Nepal are visiting various Ethiopian institutions as part of their study tour to gain a broader understanding of Ethiopia and its regional role.

During the meeting, a presentation was also delivered on Ethiopia’s current political and economic landscape, its regional engagement, and its broader role in international affairs.

Honored to deliver the opening remarks at the Hili Regional Dialogue – Africa Edition 2026 in Addis Ababa. Organized by the Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research (ECSSR) and the Anwar Gargash Diplomatic Academy (AGDA), in partnership with Ethiopia’s Institute of Foreign Affairs (IFA). The forum convenes policymakers, diplomats, business leaders, and researchers to advance Africa–UAE cooperation.

As Africa increasingly establishes itself as a key driver of global growth, partnerships grounded in mutual respect, shared prosperity, and long-term commitment have become more important than ever.

Enhanced cooperation in trade, investment, connectivity, technology, and sustainable development, supported by continuous dialogue and joint action, can help Africa and the UAE build a more resilient and prosperous future.
Ethiopia, as a gateway to Africa and a bridge for regional cooperation, remains well placed to contribute to and advance this shared vision.

I held a productive discussion with Olivia Owen, the newly appointed Ambassador of New Zealand to Ethiopia, on strengthening bilateral ties and addressing regional issues of mutual interest.

Our conversation focused on expanding cooperation in agriculture, livestock development, climate resilience, trade, and investment, while reaffirming our shared commitment to advancing common priorities.

The longstanding relationship between Ethiopia and New Zealand continues to grow grounded in mutual respect, constructive engagement, and a common aspiration for deeper partnership and collaboration.

At the Third International Conference on Sudan (2026), I highlighted the importance of sustained international support, stronger partnerships, and increased investment in host communities to ensure refugees can live with dignity and hope.

Ethiopia reaffirmed its commitment to inclusive refugee policies, focusing on expanding access to education, livelihoods, and essential services. During the conference, countries pledged nearly €1.8 billion to combat hunger in Sudan, support refugees, and provide urgent healthcare and shelter.

Earlier today, I met with Amjad Al-Momani, Ambassador of Jordan to Ethiopia. We discussed ways to deepen bilateral relations and expand economic and trade cooperation, particularly in agriculture, manufacturing, healthcare services, and tourism, with the aim of advancing mutually beneficial and sustainable development.

We also exchanged views on recent developments in the Middle East and underscored the importance of promoting peace and stability in the region.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia expresses its deepest condolences on the sudden passing of Ambassador Ayele Lire Jijamo, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ethiopia, on September 22, 2025, who was serving as Ethiopia’s Ambassador to Cuba.

Ambassador Ayele Lire dedicated many years of distinguished service to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, holding various leadership roles with professionalism and commitment. Until his passing, he faithfully represented Ethiopia, serving as Ambassador to Barbados, the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Saint Kitts and Nevis, and the Bahamas, in addition to his mission at the Embassy of Ethiopia in Havana, Cuba.

The Ministry extends its heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.

The time and place of the funeral of Ambassador Ayele Lire will be communicated in due course.
