In years to come we'll look at this era and wonder why in light of a global pandemic, economic inflation, growing inequality and technological upheaval we decided to make the private lives of a minority considerably worse.
Misinformation around disability benefits and “free cars” needs addressing urgently. Here are the clear facts: a thread🧵
Blue Badges
•Blue badges DO NOT mean a free car.
•A car displaying a blue badge is not necessarily a Motability car.

At the heart of every attack on disability benefits is the myth disabled people “get perks”: a free car, loads of cash, a life off work. It misrepresents the reality of disability, whilst exploiting low wages and high living costs to make the public envy people in daily pain.
How about awarding MPs their salaries on a points system? We can give them a 50-page form to fill out to show us what they have accomplished, and they can be regularly assessed to see if they qualify for money like disabled people. That would be more efficient, right?

So I’ve never written a story about myself. But I broke the rule to show how, despite warm words about change, police still fail women reporting sexually motivated crimes. Here’s my story of the 2 yr battle to get my offender convicted. TLDR: Don’t give up https://t.co/2VPd8Trddx
Remember that anyone can become disabled at any time or become a parent to a disabled child. In such cases, it's more important to ensure that your house is accessible rather than worrying about its appearance to others.

Disabled households now need an extra £1,010 each month to have the same standard of living as non-disabled households.
These unaffordable costs mean disabled people are routinely going without heating and medical treatment.

This is such important research and something that’d largely go unreported if it wasn’t for disabled media, such as Access All. It’s a double stigma: non-disabled authorities think it’s entirely normal to treat disabled people this way - and many non-disabled journalists do too.
*Please* do this. Students need time & space to be students: to follow their interests, read beyond the curriculum, be intellectually curious, share ideas with each other over a cuppa, go to talks on other subjects.
They can't do this when working multiple jobs to stay afloat.
Benefits & Work: PIP health conditions - Claim PIP for ME and CFS
"In 2024, there were 28,121 PIP claimants with CFS listed as their main disabling condition by the DWP. (ME is not used in the DWP's classification). This makes it 25th most common condition to get an award of PIP, out of over 500 conditions listed by the DWP."
