@HvEvil@slorantes@IveesDoublEx@AOC@AndrewYang I know this isn't welfare, I'm saying it's the same "poor people don't know how to handle money" mentality people use against UBI.
I'm sure many people fall into debt traps - similarly, many might need short-term loans during unexpected hard times. I say let people decide.
@HvEvil@slorantes@IveesDoublEx@AOC@AndrewYang I don't know. This seems to be the mentality of non-cash welfare programs: "People don't know how to handle money, so we should do it for them".
I don't think the government knows what's best for these people better than they do.
@HvEvil@slorantes@IveesDoublEx@AOC@AndrewYang It would definitely address the problem more directly, in that not as many people would need loans in the first place. I just think artificial caps on rates would have unintended bad consequences :)
Bernie Sanders & AOC have proposed capping credit card interest rates at 15% https://t.co/hl9tOkDLXk
For recent evidence on the effects of this kind of policy, we can turn to one of my favorite recent econ papers (by Ignacio Cuesta & Alberto Sepúlveda) https://t.co/crDIEFePrg
@HvEvil@slorantes@IveesDoublEx@AOC@AndrewYang People in poverty are high-risk borrowers. If banks can't adjust for this risk by charging relatively higher interest, they just won't offer credit to poor people, making things worse.
This is a policy that sounds good but actually just harms the most vulnerable.
According to an Oxford study, "about 47 percent of total US employment is at risk" due to automation.

But yea, let's just fight for a minimum wage - that's exactly what all the unemployed people will need!
@isa_solberg I don't, really. Why do all these same Western countries prop up the Saudi regime despite being one of the biggest human rights violators on the planet? Because it's all politics. Pretending to care about people is just a convenient excuse.
@isa_solberg To be clear I am not saying the protests against Maduro are not legitimate. But I can understand why people would instinctively stand against what they see as US intervention.
@isa_solberg I don't see this as being different from Syria, where the Western axis, which would clearly benefit from toppling the regime, supported rebels on pretend-ethical grounds. The humanitarian reasons are always the excuse but not really the purpose. Hence the skepticism..
@isa_solberg I get what you're saying. I would guess that most people "supporting" Maduro are doing so more out of opposition to what they see as an illegitimate overthrow, but who knows.
Probably the best arguments against Biden's electability are (1) voters think his age could be a huge problem and (2) a lot of Dems give Biden an electability premium for being a white man when morally and/or empirically, they shouldn't. The problem is those also apply to Bernie!
