Dr. Jasmin Lilian Diab, director of LAU’s Institute for Migration Studies, has been awarded a Global Visiting Fellowship at Harvard Kennedy School’s Carr-Ryan Center for Human Rights. One of only six researchers worldwide selected, Dr. Diab hopes to use the fellowship to develop joint activities and research exchanges between the two institutions. @CarrCenter@jasminldiab

I’m looking for around ten million fellow descendants of the Roman Empire to join me in setting up a colony in Italy—our ancestral homeland.
To join, you need to meet the following stringent criteria:
1. Say you descend from Romans
People in Gaza have already suffered a lot, and this war destroyed everything. People are really suffering and it’s going to take a very long time to fix what’s been damaged, but something’s will never be fixed.
There is much hurt, you can see it in people’s eyes.
We need a lasting ceasefire. We want to live.
Latest Gaza numbers from Swiss-based Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor, that reveal the unbelievable scale of the atrocity:
- 8,176 children killed and 4,112 women: 61% of those killed
- 92% of those killed are civilians (18,460 people out of 20,031)
- 1,730,000 people displaced: more than 80% of the Gaza population
And so on...
In just 49 days. Which means:
- 167 children killed a day on average, or 7 every hour, or 1 every 8 minutes.
- 377 civilians killed a day on average, or almost 16 every hour.
I don't think this has many parallels in post WW2 history, probably no parallel.
For reference the war in Ukraine recorded 9,614 civilian deaths so far, in 20 months, according to OHCHR. So given this is a population 22 lower than Ukraine, and that we're talking only 49 days (as opposed to 20 months), this war on Gaza is a crazy 520 times deadlier to civilians than the war in Ukraine 😓
Harvard Law Review refused to publish this piece by legal scholar @RabeaEghbariah that powerfully argues why "Palestine is the most vivid manifestation of the colonial condition upheld in the 21st century": https://t.co/DWxut9fN4U
They didn't censor it because of "any substantive or technical aspects" in the piece but because - as they told the author - they had "concerns about editors who might oppose or be offended by the piece, as well as concerns that the piece might provoke a reaction from members of the public who might in turn harass, dox, or otherwise attempt to intimidate our editors, staff, and HLR leadership".
The Nation however courageously decided to publish it so you can judge for yourself whether it is so offensive...
This type of censorship is, by the way, also a key characteristic of the colonial condition. When those victims of colonialism or neocolonialism simply are denied a voice, the right to plead their case, because it is "offensive".
Sadly it is not only the case of the Palestinians, it is very much still the story of the entire global South today. That's actually what motivated me to start tweeting in the first place, when I witnessed that the China story - a country I know well - was pretty much only told from the standpoint of the West and the Chinese viewpoint was too "offensive" to be heard. China isn't colonized anymore by any stretch of the imagination and most global South countries aren't anymore either - the Palestinians' plight is undeniably incomparably worse - but still, there are many structural aspects of their former colonized status that remain, and notably this grossly unfair invisibilization of their voice which at best is seen with condescension and at worse considered a dangerous "malign influence". This needs to stop. We have to invent a new world where all cultures, all peoples are allowed to have a voice which are heard with the exact same amount of respect and goodwill.
World Children's Day 2023. EU leaders sit around congratulating themselves for signing the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, while their ally, Israel, "defends itself" by raining white phosphorus on a concentration camp full of children. Well, aren't we great?
Our latest article is out this morning.
Through taking Ein El Hilweh Camp as a case study, @Yarazakka and I explore intersections across political geographies and boundaries -- ultimately, how youth development in Palestinian camps in Lebanon is hindered by the dire conditions of spatial configurations and their geopolitics.
We find that in the presence of fostered youth protection and capacity/skills building, that youth engagement and participation in the modification of their spaces act as essential drivers of change -- albeit still, in a temporary sense.

The City Library is not your typical library! The owner is an adorable old man. The book collection, mostly Arabic books, is very unique. Help support his shop if you find yourselves walking down Hamra !!
Even if you get copybooks or pens for uni !! ♡
