Last week in Nairobi at the Africa Forward Summit, an important space bringing together African and French leaders, institutions, businesses, and policy actors to reflect on the future of Africa–France partnerships.
Good conversations, interesting perspectives, and an important reminder of how much the global conversation around Africa is shifting from aid and dependency narratives toward partnerships around industrialization, innovation, energy transition, and strategic interests.
One thing that stood out for me was how strongly Africa is positioning itself not just as a participant in global discussions, but increasingly as a voice shaping them. This is something we should push forward.
A lot to reflect on moving forward, especially ahead of the next phase of climate, development, peace & security and geopolitical conversations on the continent.

Deeply saddened by the passing of Ambassador Konjit Sinegiorgis.
A trailblazer in African diplomacy and a proud Ethiopian whose legacy helped shape pathways for women and future generations of diplomats across the continent.
Her life reminds us that leadership is service, to country, continent, and collective progress.
May she rest in peace.
Congratulations to H.E. @SahleWorkZewde, former President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia & AWLN Elder, on receiving the 2026 Forbes Woman Africa Lifetime Achievement Award!
A distinguished leader whose legacy of diplomacy, peacebuilding, and women’s empowerment continues to inspire across Africa and beyond.
A truly well-deserved honor.

Climate change is redefining risks across borders, economies and societies.
Is climate security becoming the next global security challenge?

This afternoon, I held discussions with the AUC Chairperson and his team on how Ethiopia and the AU can work in close collaboration to deliver a truly African COP. I am pleased to note that, under the leadership of H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf @ymahmoudali the AUC is committed to being a key partner of Ethiopia in making COP-32 a great success.
I had a fruitful discussion with the Executive Secretary of UN ECA @claverGatete on the needs and modalities of working together to deliver a truly African COP in 2027. I am confident that the Economic Commission for Africa with the ES and his team will contribute immensely in making COP 32 a remarkable success for Africa.
Following the selection of Ethiopia as host for the 32nd Conference of the Parties (COP32) under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the Government of Ethiopia is pleased to announce the appointment of Foreign Minister Dr Gedion Timothewos as President-Designate of COP32. In his capacity as President-Designate, Dr Gedion will lead the preparatory process for COP32, in coordination with national authorities, UNFCCC bodies, and international partners.
The Government of Ethiopia expresses deep gratitude to all UNFCCC member states for entrusting the country with this responsibility, and looks forward to working closely with the global climate community under Dr Gedion’s stewardship.

After countless seasons in UNFCCC halls, you learn that some milestones only reveal their meaning when they arrive. Ethiopia stepping forward to host a COP, sooner than many imagined, carries a quiet pride and a responsibility that speaks for itself.🇪🇹🌍

Africa has spoken with one voice at the 2025 UN Climate Change Conference (COP 30) in Belém, Brazil and the world has listened. Ethiopia extends its heartfelt gratitude to the African Group of Negotiators for their unanimous endorsement of Ethiopia’s bid to host COP 32 in Addis Ababa in 2027. We are grateful for the opportunity that the Conference of the Parties is giving us to spearhead the collective effort to tackle one of the most daunting challenges faced by humanity. We are honored to be entrusted by the global community with such an important responsibility. This recognition reflects confidence in Ethiopia’s leadership in climate action and its capacity to host major global events.
Ethiopia remains fully committed to delivering a robust and meaningful outcome and inclusive COP 32 that advances collective action against climate change. Building on the momentum of the Second Africa Climate Summit, Ethiopia will continue to champion Africa as a continent of solutions and a committed partner in the global effort for a sustainable future.
Welcome to Brussels, President @TayeAtske 🇪🇹
