In case you are feeling lazy and couldn’t watch the video, this is the story being told.

In the 1990s, the then government was constructing a Jumu’at Mosque for Muslims in Southern Kaduna.

According to the account in this video, some Northern Christian senior military officers and other senior Christian public officials, many of whom had retired and were living in Southern Kaduna, decided that the structure was provocative. They called a meeting to deliberate on the issue because, through what the video describes as their regular primitive and victim mentality, they viewed the construction as an attempt to “Islamize” Southern Kaduna.

This was despite the fact that there were already numerous churches across Northern Nigeria, including inside Kaduna metropolis, where Muslims were the majority.

So, these senior indigenes reportedly sat down, deliberated and agreed that the construction of the mosque must be stopped and the structure brought down. The problem was how to achieve this while maintaining the appearance that they were the victims.

According to the account, they carefully mapped out a plan. They allegedly decided to pay 40 Muslims 2,000 each to deliberately provoke Christians in Southern Kaduna, thereby creating the impression that Muslims had started the violence and that Christians were merely responding.

2,000 naira in the 1990s was a significant amount of money, so the strategy, as presented in the video, was essentially to manufacture a provocation that would provide justification for what they had already decided to do.

It sounds crazy and unbelievable, but the video points to a document containing these allegations and claims that General Zamani Lekwot himself acknowledged that the document was authentic, and that he was arrested by the SSS in connection with it.

Then came December.

According to many accounts, everything went according to plan. The mosque project was eventually brought down, but the consequences went far beyond the original dispute. A religious crisis erupted, not only in Southern Kaduna but across Kaduna State.

The following day, in Kaduna metropolis, several churches, except some that were heavily protected, were reportedly attacked and burnt.

That was how the indigenous cycle of religious crisis in Kaduna began.

What followed was that this religious division became a powerful political weapon. The elders and influential figures who had positioned themselves as representatives of the aggrieved communities were able to use the division to hold successive governors to ransom, because any attempt to challenge the established arrangement could immediately be framed as an attack on a particular religious or ethnic group.

Then Mallam Nasir El-Rufai came on board.

And this is where the story becomes particularly interesting.

El-Rufai refused to succumb to what he considered cheap blackmail. He refused to bow to the pressure of some of these influential figures and their established political structure.

And because of that, he became a target.

They succeeded in painting him black because, in Nigeria, you can hardly truly work in public office without attracting one controversy or another. Mallam Nasir El-Rufai has always been a controversial figure, but the interesting part is that his controversies were never religious before he became Governor of Kaduna State.

Think about it.

Mallam El-Rufai governed the Federal Capital Territory, a place with a very diverse population of Christians and Muslims, yet he was never seriously defined by accusations of religious bigotry in the way he later was in Kaduna.

It was after he became Governor of Kaduna State, a place with a long and complicated history of religious and ethnic tensions, that the religious-bigotry narrative became a central part of the political campaign against him.

And according to the argument in this video, the fundamental reason was simple:

He refused to bow to Zamani Lekwot and his co-travellers.
