A female lawyer was chastised for not complying with the appropriate dress code by my noble Lords at the Supreme Court on the day we went for the ADC matter. She was only allowed to announce appearance out of magnanimity. She was not allowed to announce appearances for her junior lawyers.

I was also at the Supreme Court with learned Silk last year, and I saw a female lawyer wearing a very skimpy dress that, if her pen dropped, I am very certain she wouldn’t be able to pick it up herself. This is not Magistrate Court or just anyhow court o. Supreme Court. The apex court of the country.

What makes this worse is that she is a junior lawyer who also followed her principal, just like me. I wonder what her principal was thinking for her to have had the effrontery to dress like that to court.

Principals and judges should help us in this regard. Some people need to be monitored to act right. My own principal will never allow you to dress without complying with the dress code. You can’t even dress anyhow in his office.

This is why I appreciate judges who still ensure that dress codes are enforced in our courts. Those judges perceived as too strict are the ones helping us maintain sanity. By now, we would have lawyers wearing slippers to court. We would have female lawyers wearing bum shorts and heavy makeup with flashy wigs to court as if the courtroom is for a fashion parade.

The legal profession is not for people who cannot comply with dress codes and basic standards of professionalism. If you want to dress anyhow you like, you can enter into entertainment industry and leave legal practice for us.
