@ToneBombahawk @dumbmailguy Yes, I'm aware that even private carriers benefit in certain ways from the existence of federally-subsidized postal service. I'm just saying that in the limit, a self-funded service (with police!) that does nothing but deliver flyers is not what anybody wants.

@ToneBombahawk @dumbmailguy Hey, I can totally get on board with seeing mail service as the 1800s version of Hulu with ads, but that does tarnish the "miracle" somewhat.

And 99% of my mail arrives electronically or by private carriers, so the "benefit" accrues mostly to other people anyways.

The "best" defenses seem to be that junk mail funds the system, or separately, that filtering mail by quality would be a Bad Thing. 👻

If a guy was paid to walk up to me and just *say* things at my front door, even after I told him to stop, that would be harassment.

I can call my cell carrier and ask them to block a number, but there's no equivalent for mail.

I'm saying that without the social context of a "postal service", it's odd that a person just comes up to my house and puts things in it that I don't want.

And separately, it should be easier to stop junk mail.

@dumbmailguy Like, I get the logic of "mail carriers shouldn't make judgement calls", but that's a cop-out to a certain extent.

I could post a photo of a specific flyer that I *Do Not Want* and they'd still deliver that exact flyer to me.

Normally that would be some form of harassment.

@dumbmailguy There's a real underlying problem that they (and anybody else with a mailbox) are trying to solve though— even if you know what a flyer is, and I know what a flyer is, somehow there is zero way to stop you from putting unwanted paper in a box on my porch.

It's just deeply odd.
