Fabulous #HiroshiSugimoto exhib, #TimeMachine, on @haywardgallery till 07 Jan 24. Diverse in form but surprisingly consistent in themes his photos reflect on how meaning making is represented - work that's serious/intense but accessible. Hearteningly busy when I was there.

Thoroughly underwhelming show by #SarahLucas @Tate Britain, till 14 Jan 24 - I had the sense before going of her work being full of wit and vigour, but (possibly a result of the curation) the work seems facile, laboured and over done - more merch than art work

So much of the Marina #Abramović exhib on @royalacademy till 01 Jan 24 feels overwhelming - even when the emotions themselves are hard to name. A mixture of documentation, physical works and reperformances, united by a kind of visceral mysticism

Really lovely mini-exhib of #Crivelli's Madonna of the Swallow & #PaulaRego's #CrivellisGarden, the latter drawing from the former, showing @NationalGallery till 29 Oct - Crivelli sensational & intense, Rego's myth rich work full of whispered intimacies & unexpected detail

Finally got round to looking at @Tate Britain's rehang - not as radical as it could (should?) have been but does a decent job of thinking about how material social/economic conditions determine what art is made by who and for who - plus always good to see #GwenJohn & #MonaHatoum

Impressed both by the work and the curatorial skill at @SLG_artupdates show, Lagos Peckham Repeat, on till 29 Oct. Some fantastic pieces & interesting conversations created between them - #YinkaShonibare but also people new to me like #VictorEhikhamenor & #AdeyemiMichael

Portraits of Dogs @WallaceMuseum till 15 October can't help but have some delightful images. Lots of fun but also some problematic ideas about how the privileging of dogs may permit ill treatment of other animals & a focus on breeding relates to other hierarchies #WallaceWoofs

Worth travelling to Chichester to see the #GwenJohn exhibition @PallantGallery till 8 October - rich interiority expressed in muted colours and restrained handling of subject - actually transcendent.

#EvelynHofer, on @TPGallery till 24, Sept showcases her superbly competent images - some great urban landscapes but especially liked the front facing, deliberate group portraits of working people

Lively & considered curation makes #AWorldInCommon worth seeing at @Tate Modern, on till 14 Jan. What could have been a tokenistic survey instead becomes an opportunity to explore past & futures from an Africa both specific and shared #HassanHajjaj #EdsonChagas #KudzanaiChiurai

Some great work both by big names (@MuholiZanele, @WEEMSCarrie et al) & others new to me at @SomersetHouse #BlackVenus exhib, on till 24 Sept, but it feels like a missed opportunity - SH failing to invest in the space, amount of work & political/critical thinking it deserves

Fabulously curated #SaintFrancis of Assisi exhib @NationalGallery on till 30 July - beautiful contemporary works, like #AndreaBüttner, alongside stunning pieces by artists like #Caravaggio & #Sassetta - speak to us of #SaintFrancis' enduring religious and political significance

#CarrieMaeWeems #ReflectionsForNow is on @BarbicanCentre till 3 Sept - the still images are especially strong & considered, the politics radical rather than the usual bourgeois anti-racism from above- interesting to see #MurrayBookchin getting referenced alongside #BlackPanthers

#DearEarth, a group show at @haywardgallery on till 3 Sept, is a feeble response to the climate emergency - the quality of some of the image making can't disguise the shallowness of the thinking in this depoliticised cringefest. Only #AgnesDenes & #HimaliSinghalSoin come out well

#LifeIsMoreImportantThanArt on till 17 Sept @_TheWhitechapel - a serious & engaged attempt to think about the role art in our troubling times. It's more accessible than that sounds & there's a genuine attempt to engage with local people. Snaps of #JanetteParris & #MarkWallinger

@_TheWhitechapel's new show, Life Is More Important Than Art, till 17 Sept, thinks seriously about how art intersects with our urgent, everyday concerns, & attempts to meaningfully link with East London people. Some exciting work, like these by #JanetteParis & #MarkWallinger
