Soul cakes are traditional small, spiced biscuits given to the poor and children during Allhallowtide (Halloween, All Saints' Day, and All Souls' Day) in medieval England, in exchange for prayers for the souls of the givers, especially the deceased in Purgatory. These spiced, cookie-like cakes, often marked with a cross, evolved from the "souling" custom and are considered a precursor to modern trick-or-treating.
