On this day, 22 Chartists died fighting for democracy in Newport, south Wales. I grew up with their story instilled in my veins. We had the mural (😭😭😭), John Frost Square, and later statues. We learned about it in school. Part following their steps. https://t.co/6sMTi8Yxw1
In Welsh, the word for November is Tachwedd, meaning slaughter. The slaughtering of livestock in preparation for winter would begin on Nov 1st, following All Hallows' Eve (Nos Calan Gaeaf). 🏴
The earliest surviving reference in manuscript to Calan Gaeaf, Nov 1, the first day of winter, is in the Black Book of Carmarthen.
'Kalangaeaw gurim gordugor blaen gruc.'
'Calan Gaeaf: the tips of heather are brown in appearance.'
