For the first two days after the earthquake, the fastest way to find someone trapped under the rubble in Venezuela was switched off. Families searching for the missing were locked out of the one place that information lived.
Two earthquakes struck northern Venezuela on June 24, a 7.2 and a 7.5, 39 seconds apart, about 100 miles west of Caracas. The strongest to hit the country since 1900. The confirmed death toll has climbed toward 3,000, with tens of thousands more still listed as missing.
X had been blocked inside the country since August 2024, after a disputed election, and it was still blocked when the buildings fell. So were more than 200 other sites, including news outlets and the VPNs people use to get around the block. For two days, relatives searching for loved ones and rescuers trying to coordinate were working with the country's fastest communication tools shut off. The United Nations called restoring access a matter of life and death. It came back around June 26.
That delay is why new footage keeps surfacing now, weeks later. A backlog is draining out of a country that spent the first days of the disaster cut off from the outside. Roughly eight million Venezuelans have left over the past decade, and much of what reaches the rest of the world was relayed by relatives abroad, messaging into a place they could not reach, waiting to learn who was alive. The registry where more than 40,000 missing names are logged was built by volunteers. Not the state.
Venezuela's internet did not go dark for the earthquake. It had been dark since August 2024. The earthquake is what finally got it switched back on.
