I agree that churches should be wary of pastors enriching themselves at the expense of the flock. But I don't think 1 Corinthians 9 teaches that ministers must preach for free. Paul says he had the right to material support but voluntarily chose not to use it (v.12). Then v.14 says, “the Lord directed those who proclaim the gospel to get their living from the gospel.” Paul's personal sacrifice shouldn't be turned into a command Paul himself didn't give. Context matters.

The example Paul uses for shepherds partaking of the harvest is the ox. "Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain." This begs the question that seemingly never gets asked: How much of the harvest does the unmuzzled ox actually eat?

The ox eats only about 0.02% (roughly 1/5,000th) of the volume it treads on per day. (0.2 cu ft eaten vs. ~1,000 cu ft trodden.)

This Sunday, see if your "shepherd" is anywhere close to the answer.

But conversely, Paul is emphatically against this .02%. "We did not use this right. On the contrary, we put up with anything rather than hinder the gospel of Christ." "If I preach voluntarily, I have a reward; if not voluntarily, I am simply discharging the trust committed to me."

Let's try to follow Paul's message here, all succinctly stated, 1 Cor 9 (no skipping around to various NT books and verses). 

Firstly Paul brings up the way things used to be, which is the way things were presently, as Paul writes. Paul mentions the Law of Moses and affirms, yes, you're allowed an ox's stipend (.02%, an entirely FULL belly).

Then he does what he does, he rewrites the law, espouses and conveys God's New Covenant. Paul literally sets this New Covenant example in real time. He refuses Cash-for-Christ and basically DECLARES: If I dare to preach for anything but free I'm no longer worthy of YOUR trust, no longer worthy of GOD'S trust.

Why would a "shepherd" ever preach on this? 
Duh! Oh to be "called" to give up your life to preach, but there's literally zero volunteerism in your future. The reality will be the EXACT opposite.

The Church laymen, they are the ones that will be doing all the volunteering. 

Why do you think this building-church model has failed us? For the past 100 years one can easily mark the growth of institutionalized Cash-For-Christ. What do you expect? Like theses Bible Colleges aren't intensely teaching the best and most efficient money making models / schemes.

The laymen are starting to wake up. And like clockwork we get distracted by their use of the term, "enrich." 'Those guys over there, they're enriching themselves, I'm just a meager simpleton.' 

Nevermind that this term and its concept is found nowhere in scripture. 

Nevermind that this "church" is devouring 90-98% of the harvest. 

We are in desperate need of Church reform.

There's not a single pastor or fellow Christian songwriter I can tag who would co-sign this because their livelihood literally depends on this grift.

Colorado has allowed motorcycle lane filtering since Colorado has allowed motorcycle lane filtering since Aug. 7, 2024, but it’s a trial period, not necessarily permanent. The law is set to expire Sept. 1, 2027 unless lawmakers extend it. Colorado’s safety report is due Jan. 2027, so we should have actual state data before the trial ends.

I ride a mobility scooter and was hit by a filtering motorcyclist while I was finishing crossing at a crosswalk. The light had turned green, but the cars stayed stopped to let me finish crossing. The rider filtered past them and hit the front of my scooter basket.

The stench of smoke is nauseating. Where I live, there is one designated smoking area on the west side, past the parking lot. Yet some people smoke under the trees by the bench on the east side. That keeps me from sitting there and enjoying the fresh air, and even when I pass about 50 feet away, I can still smell the smoke.

Smoking is not a constitutional right. Follow the smoking policy and you have my respect. Ignore it and force your smoke on everyone around you, and I have a problem with that.

A firearm is different. The right to keep and bear arms is protected by the Second Amendment. Someone legally carrying concealed could walk right past me and I'd never even know it.

Your rights and choices don't mean you get to disregard everyone else's. That's the difference.
