Mustard... A direct historical and scientific connection between mustard gas and chemotherapy exists. Modern chemotherapy originated from research into mustard gas (sulfur mustard), a chemical weapon used in World War I.
During WWI, doctors observed that mustard gas exposure severely damaged bone marrow and lymphatic tissue, and drastically reduced white blood cell counts in soldiers. This suppressed rapidly dividing cells.
