Do you want to continue high school? Do you want to begin an apprenticeship? I understand that a complete and detailed overhaul is needed to get here, but I’m sure that more freedom at an earlier age than 18 is the correct path forward.

I used to be a high school math teacher. I quit when I realized I was helping sustain an aging institution in need of an overhaul.

My room became a safe space where they would vent their frustrations against this expectation. As they would discuss what actions got them in trouble, I started finding myself siding with them. After a certain age, young people should be given the freedom to choose.

However, mainstream media, traditional schooling/parenting, and a plethora of other ideologies continue to try to hold us hostage to whatever they want.

I think that more and more people are becoming anxious because it has become evident that compliance and accepting old societal structures aren’t the best way to live.

We now have the tools to separate from how our parents thought a “good life” looked like. We now have more creative capacity to do whatever we want.
