Young Historian: helping TY students connect with their personal & local history, and learn the skills of history - research, fact-finding, storytelling
Massively impressed by entries for the 2022 Young Historian Awards. Brianna Faughnan’s winning entry on Jimmy Gralton is a great story well told, using multiple sources to unearth new details and tell an unbiased story.

Love rural shops and this post from @NIVAL_NCAD: this collection from the Kerr family shoe shop in Mohill, Leitrim, 1956-90s. Amazing range of gorgeous shoes - mostly Irish-made, and many Leitrim-made. A ‘vital social record’ indeed. https://t.co/Uld1Pozsce
Wow! Muintir Eolais Chalice given to Jamestown friary in 1644; secreted after the town fell to Cromwellian forces in 1653; somehow ended up in Cincinnati, Ohio in C19; discovered by local Msgr Kelly in 2017; now returned to #Leitrim.

Great day at Mohill Historical Society #DecadeofCentenaries symposium. As usual, inspired choice of speakers: artist @SineadGuckian dug deep in @LibraryLeitrim oral histories; @FionnualaMaxwe1 showed the power of ballads and sang. Both gave voice to the untold stories of women.
@IrishWorkhouses At least 45 girls were shipped from Mohill Workhouse to Sydney in 1848 - 1850. Most aged 15-18, not all orphans, but selected for their good health and moral character. Their box of supplies included petticoats, gowns, shoes, a shawl and bonnet, 2lbs of soap and a prayer book.
In London #otd 1851 as the Great Exhibition opened in London, Letitia Veevers from Mohill, Co Leitrim 'excited much attention' (Kerry Examiner) for her 'very curious and useful products' made from nettle, hemp, sweet pea, honeysuckle, nasturtium and Marshmallow.

Looking forward to this by the excellent Dr Padraig McGarty on Friday. This time he will cover Leitrim 1922, where widespread lawlessness pervaded, with some local opposition to pro-Treaty forces and cross border raids in Fermanagh.

Impressed and excited at level and range of submissions for this year’s #YoungHistorian awards: grandparents’ recollections; local buildings & structures; personal links with international events. Our future is in good hands when young people understand the past like this.
The 2022 #YoungHistorian programme has begun with five Leitrim TY classes and teachers working to bring the history on their doorstep to life.
See our new website https://t.co/dN1090lnUn for a wide range of research sources on #Leitrim history.
In partnership with @LibraryLeitrim
Wonderful to see this pilot #YoungHistorian project come to fruition this year. Students and teachers deserve massive credit for their great research and discoveries. As does @leitrimcoco Library for driving it.
Love to see more schools involved next year.
