Using laser-based technology, @UNDP is helping Pacific Island countries create detailed 3D ridge-to-reef maps of their territories. This captures the lands above water, and the reefs and seabeds below.
In #Tuvalu alone, 500 square kilometers of land, reefs and lagoons was accurately captured and mapped in just 30+ hours of flying!
These maps help answer fundamental questions on which the future of Pacific Islands: How exposed are different communities to rising sea levels? Where will floodwaters flow? Which investments can provide the greatest protection? What are the safest locations for public infrastructure? How can insurance products best respond to climate risk?
I agree with my colleagues @yusuketaishi @KribBKKmake that this effort should be conducted across the Pacific behind local demand. Read more here ➡️ https://t.co/7Dck3eI5n7
Something many of us take for granted is missing across much of the Pacific: accurate maps of the coast.
Without them, how can we understand where sea-level rise and coastal flooding will hit, let alone adapt?
My latest blog looks at this fundamental gap with @KribBKK
7 in 10 people on the Pacific's low-lying coasts live on ground that has never been precisely measured.
Without that data, governments cannot say where floodwater will go.

Ahead of #COP31, the Pacific isn’t waiting.
With a pre‑COP in Fiji 🇫🇯 and leaders meeting in Tuvalu 🇹🇻 this October, a portfolio approach to climate resilience is already delivering results. Now it’s time to scale what works.

As climate impacts escalate, the G7 Adaptation Accelerator Hub is becoming a model for turning #adaptation ambition into action, supporting countries from planning to investment and implementation.
Thanks to our speakers- great opportunities for countries to work together #COP30
Climate adaptation isn’t a bill to pay.
It’s an investment in our futures, food, cities, coastlines and lives.
#AdaptationFinance, however, must flow faster and reach the frontlines. Here are 4 shifts to make that happen: https://t.co/sqiJJIGWbj #COP30#AdaptationGap
Weather & climate data are the foundation of every forecast and early warning - yet 90% is missing in the world’s most vulnerable countries.
The newly announced @UN_SOFF impact bond is a breakthrough in mobilizing finance to #CloseTheDataGap.

Adaptation needs are rising – fast.
Finance must be faster, more predictable and better aligned with national systems.

“Mutirão” is more than a Brazilian tradition, it’s a model for #ClimateAction.
As we head to #COP30, we must invest in resilience for both displaced people and the communities who welcome them.

As #COP30 negotiations begin, @RohiniKohli and I outline 4 key elements to make the most of—and shape the future of—adaptation finance amid the massive finance gap that still exists.

@HennyNgu & I wrote about our visit to a refugee camp in #Ethiopia. The climate crisis is fueling displacement—and ahead of #COP30, we argue this must be tackled as a development issue, not only a humanitarian one

Humanitarian aid saves lives, but alone it cannot build resilience.
Ahead of #COP30, our @HennyNgu and @YusukeTaishi urge long-term climate finance that builds shared resilience where people seek safety: https://t.co/sfc1T4lWPM
What is required is not just more aid, but a rethinking of how we invest to build resilience and reduce aid dependency.
-say @HennyNgu & @yusuketaishi.
#COP30 in #Brazil 🇧🇷 should generate the spirit of a global mutirão!

Protecting Mongolia’s ecosystems means protecting its future. Today marks successful close of our 7-year ENSURE project. 🙏 to H.E. @BatiinBatbaatar@MECCMongolia, #MOFALI, @theGEF, & partners for turning commitments into real action for resilient ecosystems & rural livelihoods.
Flood risks due to melting glaciers are among the most obvious consequences of climate change that require urgent action. With funding from @theGCF, @UNDP will work with #Nepal to reduce water levels of dangerous lakes up in the Himalayas.
Great news: @theGCF approves $36.1 million funding to reduce glacial lake outburst flood risk in Nepal 👏
With @UNDP support, the project will strengthen early warning, lower dangerous glacial lakes and protect mountain communities. https://t.co/4mPqx0CGBW
