Contemporary Portuguese Historian Fernão Lopes de Castanheda (1500 AD – 6th June 1559) describes how Maharani Karnavati of Mewar — the widowed Queen of Rana Sanga — bravely resisted Muslim invaders before finally committing 𝙟𝙖𝙪𝙝𝙖𝙧 :

But when there was ultimately no hope left, being a 𝙆𝙨𝙝𝙖𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙞, she willingly chose death over dishonour. Now tell me, who ‘forced’ her to commit 𝙟𝙖𝙪𝙝𝙖𝙧 when her husband was already dead and she was commanding Rajputs herself?

I agree with him. Movies shouldn’t glorify patriarchal ideals where abstract notions like honour and chastity are portrayed as more valuable than life itself.

Bollywood should make a movie on Rajmata Yesubai Raje Saheb, focusing on how, even after her husband’s capture was certain and subsequently confirmed, she chose to live despite knowing all too well the horrors that awaited women in Mughal captivity.

She endured 17 years in captivity, holding on to the hope of better days, even after her only son escaped leaving her behind.

Rajput history is overrated and tainted with patriarchal ideals and brutality. People discuss it unnecessarily. We need to discuss Maratha history more, make it part of school syllabus and need to move beyond the familiar stories of great Maratha icons like Shivaji Maharaj & Sambhaji Raje and bring forward the stories of courageous Maratha women like Rajmata Yesubai Raje Saheb who can serve as genuine role models for women’s empowerment.

Just remember: choosing life is not cowardice.
