@BEASTgroyper once again i feel a fool for not paying attention to the profile name of someone arguing this shit. fuck off and die in a fire you fucking fascist
this is the real core of it all to me. either you think someone like Gellar is a person (and all that entails), or you think that his crime(s) disqualify him from personhood. and the latter do not actually care about justice, they want vengeance.
@dduhnzoe@ZEA5U5 You start to realize literally the only tenable ethical position is to acknowledge people who do awful things as complex individuals who are worthy of the time it takes to try to change their behavior because we have mountains of evidence to show “punishment “deters no one
@ricewtr i mean if you really believe that everyone with any sort of public presence should be a saint, fine. i think that’s ridiculous and completely disconnected from moral reality. i’m not arguing he deserves your attention.
@BEASTgroyper this some waffles and pancakes shit lmao. i have never said anything about your obligation to keep watching him. ive said repeatedly i won’t. but keep making up shit to make you feel better i guess
@ricewtr i mean it’s the world we live in, as awful as it is.
as far as your second sentence, if you think i’m defending what he did, you’re either illiterate or deliberately ignoring the substance of my tweets. i have never said he’s Rehabilitated, nor that you should keep watching him
@HighCope what would an “actual” punishment be? why and how would that be better than what actually happened?
like even leaving aside the fact that i do not think “punishment” is basically ever a good way to approach justice. but i recognize most people don’t agree with me on that.
@ricewtr what do you mean by “punished”? how would that have made him a better person compared to what actually happened?
as for the victim, her personhood is not in question, other than the fact that we’re having this discussion with no knowledge of her position, yourself included.
where’s that tweet from the Mountain Goats guy about how most christians cannot even try to understand the implications of the radical love Jesus preached
Again it is talking about insults and pride. Meaning you shouldn't get butthurt, and then physically attack them. It was meant as a reinforcement of "Eye for an eye". Keep the punishment just. Do not go above the crime itself. Pretty sure a murderer being put to death is a just punishment
@ndnsailormoon i try and resist arguments like “they were lying they knew this would happen” but i genuinely find it hard to believe this person would post that shit with no concept that it could blow up like this.
@tankwycheck it’s really no different from how conservatives (et al) talk about people being “criminals” like it’s an Identity, not even just an indelible mark of sin but the core of one’s character.
@audristicswag@BobbyTannahill he talked to the victim after, recognized it was assault, submitted to a title IX investigation and its consequences, and claims to be repentant. it isn’t simply that it was a decade ago.
my take on the Gellar thing is that its basically all performative. revealed 10 years later for discourse points with their mutuals with no input from victim; most reactions are about seeing Gellar get “punished” by losing subs/work/money, etc. justice nowhere to be seen.
@applealicepie@BobbyTannahill recognizing thst your choices as a random stranger don’t mean anything to the ethical core of the issue (the victim’s life and Gellar’s repentance) is not a defense of his actions.
@Bluebird3415@BobbyTannahill —about the best one could in such a situation. repentant, open about it (to people in his life), no dithering, etc. if you think he should be in prison, obviously isn’t enough, but that ain’t me.
@Bluebird3415@BobbyTannahill the phrasing implies that how he acted about it, both at the time and since, doesn’t matter. i think ostraciziation is another form of punitive, carceral “justice”. will i keep watching his work? probably not. but i look at what he’s said and done and frankly think he’s done—
can’t help but see it as another version of the general issue of individualistic consumerist mindset. people invent this cohort claiming you must forgive him and keep consuming his content.
feels fitting that the one person to directly say to me “okay but no one is obligated to still watch his work” (which, obviously, i have not said) was a fucking groyper.
not to say people aren’t arguing this, i’m sure some are. but it’s a vanishingly small number.
like again, your actions as an audience member matter, ethically, to no one other than you. “punishing” Gellar by denying him your attention (or even money) is more about your own sense of moral cleanliness than anything material.
