Lima Vaz and Paulo Meneses, who were close friends, were two Hegelian Jesuits who revolutionized the study of Hegel in Brazil. They were so meticulous with hegelian terminology that they would modify portuguese words or even coin new ones in order to establish a technical hegelian lexicon. To this day, few traditions in the world draw as many distinctions as those developed by Meneses and Lima Vaz.

Moreover, both Jesuits were deeply engaged with social issues, including the defense of Indigenous peoples. Jesuits in Brazil have a long history of advocating for the working class, defending Indigenous communities and standing with the poor. This influence is so significant that the Brazilian left has traditionally held thinkers such as Saint Augustine in high regard.
