Gamal Abdel Nasser said it plainly.

The Israelis “speak about the Nazi treatment and how they were badly treated in Germany… they treated Arabs the same way, and they expelled them, killed them, killed their children, destroyed their villages.”

He was there in 1948. He watched villages emptied, families driven out, children killed, homes erased. Then the world was told to remember only one catastrophe and forget the other.

Nasser’s point was not complicated: you cannot claim exclusive victimhood while repeating the same methods of expulsion and destruction against another people. The Palestinian refugees did not vanish. Their villages were not imaginary. Their right of return was not a slogan invented yesterday.

Palestine was not empty land waiting for a new owner. It was a people with homes, fields, and children. Those who were driven out still exist. Their demand is not hatred. It is return, recognition, and an end to the idea that one people’s suffering erases another’s.

From the river to the sea, the land had a people. They were not erased. They were not forgotten. They are still here.

هاتوا نصفه الثاني يا أبوي

ماذا يشعر الأب حين يحمل نصف ولده في قطعة قماش؟
حين قُصف ولدي بصير، أصابه الصاروخ فشطر جسده إلى نصفين. حملناه على عجل إلى سيارة الإسعاف. كان رأسه بجواري على سريرها، لكنني لم أستطع البقاء في الخلف، فطلبت من السائق أن يتوقف كي أجلس إلى جانبه.
نزلت بصعوبة، متكئًا على المسعف. وحين نهض مساعد السائق ليُفسح لي مكانه، سقطت من حجره قطعة قماش جُمعت فيها أشلاء ولدي. رأيت ساقيه وأحشاءه على الأرض. انحنيت، وجمعتها بيدي، وأعدتها إلى القماش، ثم وضعتها في حضني.
طوال الطريق إلى المستشفى، كنت أحمل نصف ولدي في حضني، بينما كان نصفه الآخر على سرير الإسعاف. لم أعرف كيف يتسع قلب أبٍ لهذه اللحظة؛ كنت أعرف فقط أن بصيرًا ولدي، وأن عليّ أن أبقى معه.
وعندما وصلنا، نزلت أحمل قطعة القماش. حملها أحدهم عني، والتفتُّ إلى ولدي الذي أُنزل من سيارة الإسعاف، وقلت:
«هاتوا نصفه الثاني يا أبوي، لأجمعه على جسده الطاهر».
يا بصير، جمعتُ ما استطعتُ من جسدك، لكن كيف أجمع قلبي بعدك؟ كنتُ أحملك صغيرًا فأخشى عليك من نسمة برد، ثم حملتُ نصفك في قطعة ق��اش، والعالم يمضي كأن شيئًا لم يحدث.
اللهم إنك تعلم أنه ولدي، وأنني لم أترك منه ما استطعتُ حمله. فتقبّله شهيدًا، واجمعني به في جناتك، حيث لا فراق بعد لقاء، ولا أبٌ يُنادى عليه ليحمل نصف ولده.

Bring Me His Other Half, My Son

What does a father feel when he carries half of his son in a piece of cloth?
When my son Baseer was struck, the missile tore his body in two. We rushed him into an ambulance. His head was beside me on the stretcher, but I could not bear to stay in the back. I asked the driver to stop so I could sit beside him.
I stepped out with difficulty, leaning on a paramedic. As the driver’s assistant rose to give me his seat, a piece of cloth holding my son’s remains fell from his lap. I saw my son’s legs and internal organs on the ground. I bent down, gathered them with my own hands, wrapped them again, and held them in my lap.
All the way to the hospital, I carried half of my son while the other half lay on the ambulance stretcher. I do not know how a father’s heart can hold such a moment. I only knew that Baseer was my son, and I had to stay with him.
When we arrived, I stepped out carrying the cloth. Someone took it from me. I turned to my son as he was lifted from the ambulance and said:
“Bring me his other half, my son, so I can put his body back together.”
Baseer, I gathered what I could of your body. But how do I put my heart back together without you? Once, I held you as a little boy and worried that even a cold breeze might hurt you. Then I held half of you in a piece of cloth, while the world went on as though nothing had happened.
O Allah, You know he is my son, and that I carried every part of him I could. Accept him among the martyrs, and reunite me with him in Your Paradise, where no reunion ends in parting, and no father is called to carry half of his child.

While Israel continues its genocide against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, ethnic cleansing in the West Bank and persists with imposing its unlawful occupation and system of apartheid against Palestinians, PM Benjamin Netanyahu, wanted by the ICC for war crimes and crimes against humanity, is set to address the UN General Assembly in New York instead of standing trial at The Hague.

It is doubly shameful that the US government continues to ignore the arrest warrant against Netanyahu - while denying Palestinian representatives visas to attend the UNGA.

Nearly two years since the ICC issued arrest warrants against Netanyahu, impunity continues to reign - and Palestinians are paying the price. Continuing to undermine the ICC sends a cruel message to all victims of international crimes that prospects for justice remain elusive while the USA and other powerful states deliberately erode the universal value of international law.

All states, including the USA, should enforce the Court’s arrest warrants and hand over Netanyahu to the ICC. International law must be upheld and international justice mechanisms supported to end impunity for international crimes and ensure respect for human rights for all.
