A Love Letter to Women,

Women in every traditionally male profession,

You know the tropes. The very qualities celebrated in men are recast as flaws in women.

Decisive becomes “aggressive”.
Confident becomes “arrogant”.
Passionate becomes “emotional”.
Uncompromising becomes “crazy”.

You know them because you’ve heard them. You’ve lived them.

Wear them with pride.
💪🏿💪🏾💪🏽💪🏼💪🏻

I feel no sting from those words. I wear them as a badge of honour, particularly when they come from mediocre men. “Virago,” I write in my bio to pay homage to all the tropes I have lived and heard.

I am no timid soul. I fear none. Uncompromisingly, I stand on principle and refuse to budge. I refuse to be bullied. I work damn hard. I rarely lose a battle.

And by God, do I love South Africa and use all my traits to stand in its full defence, no longer harnessed to serve political interests. I will unflinchingly and bravely stand in the firing as I once did in pursuit of a political cause.

As several powerful women have said, flawed in their own way, diverse in their experience, across geographic boundaries, but words true in male-dominated professions:

Margaret Thatcher said:
“I always cheer up immensely if an attack is particularly wounding because I think, well, if they attack one personally, it means they have not a single political argument left.”

Helen Suzman said:
“I am provocative, and I admit this. It isn't as if I'm only on the receiving end, a poor, frail little creature. I can be thoroughly nasty when I get going, and I don't pull my punches.”

Mona Elthaway said:
“When they go low, we go high. No, I f’ing don't. If you go low, I'm going to come for you. I do not have the luxury or privilege to be civil with people who do not recognise my full humanity.”

Serena Williams said:
