#4 R-Type. Best arcade conversion for the ZX? Possibly. Nice graphics, but a lot tougher than it's big brother. It captures the feel of the arcade game more than nearly every other conversion. Level 3 is still the best level of any game ever.
#6 Exolon. This was a present on my 16th birthday, the day I received my O-level results. Still one of my favourite games, the game works because the gameplay is pitched perfectly. As a bonus, the game looks excellent as well, thanks to sensible and clever use of colour.
#23 Monty Python's Flying Circus: Spam. The Spanish Inquisition. How to recognise trees. Spam. Keep left signs. Dead parrots. Spam. Spam. Dinsdale. Spam. Cheeselok. Gumby. Feet. Spam. And, of course, Spam. What a legacy. RIP #TerryJones
#32 Back to Skool: Where to go from Skool Daze? How about add a girls' school and a playground? This retains all the fun of the original, and theres much more to do. Possibly a little more awkward thanks to more keys to remember, but still pretty darn good.
#41 Gladiator: After Fist, there was a rush of fighting games. Gladiator was a great idea, but you needed about 30 fingers to play it well, and it pre-dated some of the later fighting games with the combinations required to perform certain moves. The 128K version added even more!
#48 Transmuter: One of the 1st Codies games, I loved this shmup. The graphics were flickery as hell, but it was great fun despite zero originality. It's refreshing to see a hype-free Codies game - 2 years down the line and it would probably be called Spaceship Shooting Simulator
The ZX Spectrum Next is out and hopefully folks will embrace this marvellous computer: reliving classic games and of course, new games! To celebrate, below are Speccy screens then updated using the Next palette.
We had a lot of great games, but have we played them? 🤔
