Common phrase that indicates someone isn’t in enough pain to change:
“I’m not gonna give up my [insert food/substance/action that has control of their life]”.
Fine. I’ll wait.
The best heuristic for motivating someone to change something is to avoid pain for someone they love. At least that's what I've found.
I use what I call the 4 Motivators.
1. Gaining pleasure for myself
2. Avoiding pain for myself
3. Gaining pleasure for someone I love
4. Avoiding pain for someone I love
By far, the most effective one of these for most people is going to be number 4.
Ask them to imagine the impact of not changing their behavior on their children, for example. If you play that out, you can come up with some pretty devastating potential consequences.
