Hakainde Hichilema came to power five years ago promising to restore Zambia’s democracy. But his government now commits the very abuses he once railed against.

What did I tell you about Zambia? 🤣🤣🤣
Zimbabweans know how this begins. It starts with one person being sent out to test the waters. When there is resistance, they will claim that she is a lone wolf simply expressing her personal views.
The person who stands to benefit will then insist that they respect the Constitution and are constitutionalists. We have heard that before.
Eventually, he will return and say, “The pressure is too much. I have to listen to my people.”
This is a well-trodden road. We have seen this script before, and we know how it ends. The destruction of presidential term limits is never presented as a power grab at the beginning. It is always disguised as development, stability or the will of the people.
On @CNN this evening I explained that recourse to courts for the presidential election dispute is an academic exercise for the opposition as history tells us that the opposition always loses in presidential election court cases.
I also spoke about the massive economic implications for ordinary citizens if this dispute is not resolved amicably.
The clampdown on civil liberties continues in @HHichilema‘s #Zambia. Police have violated the rights to peaceful assembly and free speech by refusing to allow the main opposition Patriotic Front to hold a public rally in Lusaka this weekend. The excuse is unspecified 'security concerns'. Had Edgar Lungu banned a political rally for such vague reasons, Western diplomats and civil society would have been outraged. Today, these groups are silent!

A DEBT TREATMENT MILESTONE FOR #ZAMBIA TODAY: we have reached an agreement on a comprehensive debt treatment with our Official Creditors under the #G20 Common Framework. This marks a significant step towards restoring Zambia’s long-term debt sustainability and economic growth - @S_Musokotwane - Finance Minister.

@ssishuwa Why is this taking place in South Africa instead of Lusaka,Zambia? I appreciate the fact that it's happening in South Africa and I honor our brothers and sisters for hosting this event but how come there's no event taking place in Lusaka ?
@eliasm77@daddyhope The problem of #Zim was the same problem of #Zambia. In terms of products #Zim could still be doing better than #Lusaka. The Reserve bank must take charge of the monetary policy and fix the money sector
