To demonstrate a genuine will to reform the judiciary, it is imperative that the recommendations laid out in the 2013 report of the UN Special Rapporteur on the independence of judges and lawyers be implemented https://t.co/orHWxr4AUM
#Maldives 🇲🇻: The IFJ strongly condemns the jailing of MJA VP Mohamed Shahzan and Adhadhu journalist Leevan Ali Nasir, following the nation's gag order on all public discussion regarding allegations on President Muizzu's personal life
@mjamaldives
As a writer and former prisoner of conscience my plea to President Dr. Muiz is not to ratify the Media Bill. Whenever a government suppresses people’s right to freedom of expression it inevitably makes the country less free and less prosperous. I also call on the journalists arrested yesterday to be freed. @MMuizzu
This is not business as usual.
My new UN report, From Economy of Occupation to Economy of Genocide, is out today.
It shows how corporations have fueled and legitimised the destruction of Palestine.
Genocide, it would seem, is profitable. This cannot continue, accountability must follow.

#Maldives: Two Supreme Court Justices have been dismissed in a process that raises significant concerns about interference in the independence of the judiciary. Judges may only be removed following a fair hearing and for reasons of incapacity or behavior rendering them unfit to discharge their duties.
- Only 19 out of 4,345 corruption cases reached prosecutors (2019-2023)
- US$18M ordered recovered - but only $22,750 actually retrieved
- Country's CPI score drops further in 2025

Has anyone gotten in touch with @bankofmaldives to find out if this affects students abroad?
Because if so, all of us would have to come back. We won’t be able to sustain ourselves by buying dollars on the black market for FOUR years.
@raees_muizzu
Hey @bankofmaldives, how does this foreign transaction limit via MVR cards impact students studying abroad? Our rent/bills are due this coming week 🤦🏻♀️
Shocked that the Government of #Maldives has decided to abandon one of the key features of the Maldivian fisheries industry - Sustainability!
The decision to lift the ban on longline fisheries and allow for shark fisheries is reckless and one that will reverse gains we made during the @MDPSecretariat government. It endangers the tourism industry and our international reputation and leadership. The high bycatch, including of endangered species which are critical to our marine ecosystem, will also harm our prospects of bolstering trade.
I urge the Government of Maldives to immediately reverse this ill-considered decision and work in the best interests of the people.
Longline fishing has devastating consequences for the ocean’s health and biodiversity. We need your help to protect our ocean!
Urge the Maldivian government to refuse new longline fishing licenses, and sign the petition #AgainstLonglining ---> https://t.co/KMW5EHRIwQ
Bull Sharks, Tiger Sharks, and Great Hammerheads are being lured into inner lagoons due to feeding. Normally, they hunt in the open ocean. This change in behavior means it's only a matter of time before something terrible happens again.
