Yokozuna Hoshoryu got heated. During his fierce pushing and thrusting match with Komusubi Takayasu, he was slapped in the face, and he immediately slapped back. After pushing Takayasu out of the ring, Hoshoryu delivered a dame-oshi (an unnecessary extra shove after the bout is decided), sending his opponent flying off the dohyo.
On his way back, the head judge, Kumegawa oyakata (former Komusubi Kotoinazuma), gave him an oral warning, saying, "The spectators could get hurt, and a Yokozuna must wrestle with the mindset that winning is a matter of course." Hoshoryu reportedly apologized, saying, "I am sorry. I got heated."
Back in the preparation room after his bath, he started by admitting, "I just got a little heated." When asked if a thrust to the face was the cause, he shared his feelings: "Maybe. It was like, if you hit me, I'm hitting you back."
Prior to the bout, his record against Takayasu was a difficult 4 wins and 10 losses (including a default win and a loss). This sense of rivalry and the pressure of aiming for his first Yokozuna championship in his fifth tournament at the rank may have contributed to his rough wrestling.
With co-leaders Onosato and Aonishiki also winning, Hoshoryu secured his win in the final bout of the day. "I'm not focused on that. I'm only thinking about performing my own sumo and concentrating fully on each match, one day at a time," he said. With three days left in the tournament, while the dame-oshi is not commendable, Hoshoryu's instinctive, emotional wrestling switch has been flipped.

This is officially one of the strangest pictures in American history, and I do not doubt that it will be considered iconic a hundred years from now.
