Police investigate assault
Police are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying a suspect in an assault where hate is believed to be a motivating factor.
On July 4, police received a report of an assault that occurred earlier that day at approximately 1 p.m. at Costco located at 230 Chain Lake Drive in Halifax. It was reported that a man was yelling racially offensive language at a family in the store. The man then approached another customer and assaulted him while continuing to shout racially offensive language.
The suspect is described as a white man, between 30 to 40 years of age and bald. At the time of the incident, he was wearing a black t-shirt, jeans and black boots.
Halifax Regional Police’s Hate Crime Unit is involved with the investigation.
Anyone with information on the suspect’s identity or anyone who was targeted by the suspect during the incident at Costco is asked to call police at 902-490-5020. Anonymous tips can be sent to Crime Stoppers by calling toll-free 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), submitting a secure web tip at www.crimestoppers.ns.caor using the P3 Tips App.
Crimes and incidents motivated by hate are taken very seriously. If someone finds themselves exposed to behaviour that is offensive, threatening or intimidating, they are encouraged to report it to police. Even if an investigation does not find criminal wrongdoing, it is important to have it on record.

Security is built together.
Canada's decision to procure German-Norwegian submarines is a clear sign of a new level of cooperation. We are investing in our security together – and reinforcing the transatlantic Alliance.
The allegations reported today are deeply disturbing. Character and accountability matter regardless of party. It’s time for Graham Platner to drop out and allow for someone else to be nominated and give Democrats the best chance to win this seat in November.
We are deeply disturbed by the racist and Islamophobic attack targeting hijabi Muslim women, as well as the physical assault and hateful slurs directed at a Muslim man at Halifax Costco this past weekend.
We are in contact with those affected and with Halifax Regional Police.
No one should face hate or fear while simply grocery shopping with their family.
We call on all elected officials in Nova Scotia and Canada to publicly condemn this incident and to take concrete actions to formulate a national strategy against this massive rise in violent Islamophobia in recent months.
We also thank the bystander who intervened against the man, and the Costco security staff who acted to remove the individual.
