The African Union Commission’s statement on tensions involving Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Egypt is a study in institutional avoidance. It presents itself as a call for restraint while refusing to confront the conduct that produced the tensions in the first place. By grouping three countries into a single vague category, the AU protects diplomatic convenience at the expense of responsibility, truth, and the principles of its own Constitutive Act.
The crisis did not emerge from some abstract triangular dispute. It followed years of Ethiopian political provocations, territorial rhetoric, and unilateral actions that directly threatened Eritrea’s sovereignty. For more than three years, Ethiopia’s leadership has questioned the legitimacy of Eritrea’s independence, dismissed its thirty-year struggle for independence and the 1993 UN-observed referendum, and publicly entertained the acquisition of Eritrean ports by force. Senior Ethiopian military figures have displayed maps depicting large parts of Eritrea within Ethiopia. These were not misunderstandings. They were explicit challenges to the territorial integrity of a sovereign member state. Yet the AU remained silent, choosing institutional comfort over the principles it was created to defend.
Principles Must Mean Something
The Commission invokes the AU Constitutive Act as though mentioning it were sufficient. It is not. Article 4 establishes clear obligations: respect for borders existing at independence, peaceful settlement of disputes, and prohibition of the use or threat of force among member states. These provisions are supposed to govern the Union’s response to crises, not decorate communiqués whose authors decline to apply them.
Where, then, is the unequivocal declaration that Eritrea’s coastline belongs to Eritrea? Where is the warning that economic need, population size, or strategic ambition confers no entitlement to another country’s territory? Maritime access can be negotiated, but it cannot become a license to redraw borders, threaten force, or intimidate a sovereign neighbor. If the AU believes its own Constitutive Act, it should be capable of saying so without qualification.
That responsibility is even greater because the OAU, succeeded by the African Union, was not a bystander to the Eritrea–Ethiopia peace process. It played a central role in the negotiations that culminated in the Algiers Agreement and was among its witnesses and guarantors. In 2006, the AU joined an explicit call for implementation of the Eritrea–Ethiopia Boundary Commission’s decision without qualification, reaffirming that the Commission’s determinations were final and binding. Yet in the years that followed, the AU failed to sustain that position with the same clarity and urgency, even as implementation of the EEBC decision remained stalled due to Ethiopia’s refusal.

Tibor Nagy: political maverick with an axe to grind against #Eritrea;
Embassy of the State of Eritrea, Washington, DC; 26 February 2026
*"...The former US Assistant Secretary of State for Africa indeed lacks academic and analytical credentials, and more importantly, personal integrity and honesty as his lop-sided positions and views on the Horn of Africa are often influenced by his lobbying contracts and unorthodox political networks".
*"...In a nutshell, Tibory Nagy digresses to dwell on tangential and distorted narratives primarily and principally because his central objective is to divert attention from the root cause of the current problem: the Ethiopian regime’s willful and deplorable agenda of war and conflict in pursuit of what it calls 'sovereign access to the sea' by invading the sovereign territory of its neighbor. This dangerous act cannot be justified and rationalized by other fallacious pretexts and narratives. Tibor Nagy is not, evidently, in a position to deliver on this account because he is under the beck and call of his financial sponsors; veritable cases, as it were, of 'who pays the piper calls the tune'!"

#Eritrea's senior delegation composed of Mr. Hagos Gebrehiwet, Head of Economic Affairs; and, Mr. Nesredin Mohammed Saleh, Minister of Trade and Industry, is participating at the Alamien Business Forum hosted by Egypt from 2 to 3 October this week.
Participants in the Forum include: Heads of State and Government Representatives; senior leaders from leading international and regional financial institutions; as well as key actors driving transformative change across Africa's most critical sectors - from infrastructure, trade and critical minerals to digital innovation, health markets and emerging industries.
Eritea's delegation also met yesterday with Dr. George Elombi, the President and Chariman of the Board of Directors of African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank).
The discussions centered on existing financial services between Eritrean Banks and Afreximbank. The two sides agreed to expand and bolster the prevailing smooth cooperation and embark on new financial services for various projects.
Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki and Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud traveled to Egypt to participate in the Alamein Africa Forum. During the meetings hosted by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, discussions are expected to focus on security, stability, and economic cooperation in Africa and the Horn of Africa.
Eritrea's firm position that any and all bilateral/multilateral cooperation and partnership agreements must be based on mutual respect, symmetry and the full and unencumbered political independence of the parties concerned is a matter of public record.
This Potemkin Party mouthpiece attributes the signature trademark of subservience and surrogate role of its own government to Eritrea.
Unfortunately, duplicity has become second nature to the Potemkin Party!

I salute Eritrea for this brave initiative.
#Ethiopia should not be a hypocritical state, it should cease and desist from all acts that could threaten the stability of a sisterly African nation.
As we condemn Colonialists and imperialists, we also condemn Ethiopia and it's insensible ambitions of reaching sea.
