Would you like to see robots serving in crowded restaurants, bars, hospitals, and perhaps your home?
Excited to share our first shot at loco-manipulation: SteadyTray - humanoid robots can make really good waiters.
As a built-in feature of human, it is hard to notice/appreciate how much stabilization and rebalancing our arms and entire body are naturally doing when transporting/serving stuff, until we first tried to make a humanoid robot do it. Yet another example of Moravec’s paradox.
For me, it was really fun to see the robot save the tilting cup and transport it stably with a tray despite all the pushes. They take their job seriously.
Humanoid robots shouldn’t just walk — they should serve.
Meet SteadyTray: a robot waiter task where a humanoid transports unsecured objects on a tray without spilling, tipping, or dropping them.
We show stable transport of things like cups, glasses, food containers, and more — even under external disturbance.

@sunfanyun Another also very strong argument against sim is the system identification (real2sim) problem for deformables in the general sense is a nightmare.

BREAKING - 36,558 total votes were cast in UC Academic Workers’ Strike Authorization Votes, with 98% voting Yes to authorize a multi-unit strike if necessary. These are far and away the largest and most decisive strike authorization votes ever taken by Academic Workers in the US.
Faculty can support Academic Workers while our unions negotiate new contracts. UC faculty can sign onto @uc_faculty's statement and demand that @UofCalifornia cease breaking the law and settle fair contracts.
The Council of UC Faculty Associations calls on the University of California to cease its unlawful behavior, resume good faith negotiations, and settle fair contracts with UAW 2865, UAW 5810, and SRU-UAW. Full statement at: https://t.co/bbYBAdM2fy
Update from @sruuaw bargaining table:
"The University doesn't give salary increases based on inflation or cost of living" -UC Labor Relations
Their offer? $28k/year.
How much does it cost to afford rent in CA? $54k/year.
Wake up, @UofCalifornia. #FairUCNow
This is what 1,300 Academic Workers coming together looks like at UC San Diego! @uaw2865 @uaw5810 More BOMMMs happening soon, info at: https://t.co/I2HgaPfruP📷@joeorephoto
“Do you have a badge?” So you need approval to listen to your Dean’s talk on open cocktail party happening in workers’ workspace and working hours. Guess that explains why 50+ academic workers cannot talk to their Dean - busy with things matter more than workers in poverty. 1/2
Update: We ran into the Dean outside a cocktail party where he told us repeatedly "You are not invited to the party!" Apparently he doesn't know or care about Grad Workers’ low wages and how rent burdened we are. This is why we're organizing for strong union contracts. #FairUCnow
Bitter words aside, anyone wants to try the cocktails and champagne though? Omg they look so expensively good. Let’s see if we can sneak in the next party 🙏
@LittleLeinaa @uaw2865 I think that is in the plan but I guess it would probably be the same thing: “oh labor relations advise me not to talk with you”. We first tried to meet the Chair, then the Dean, same reply. Dean wouldn’t meet with us even though he is right there inside the glass door.
