The victims, primarily from the Ovaherero and Nama communities, were targeted because they refused to let the colonisers take their land and cattle.
Genocide Remembrance Day in Namibia on Wednesday follows years of pressure on Germany to pay reparations.
Kavango East Regional Education Director, Christine Shilima, says the academic performance of learners in Grades 1, 2 and 3 is a cause for concern.
"The Kavango East Region is not doing well in terms of literacy and numeracy for our grades 1, 2, and 3 learners. Samples taken in 2025 show that our learners performed below 30%. They can’t read and write properly and fluently. It’s a concern.”
She also says the repetition rate at junior primary, Grade 8 and 10 is worrisome.
The Directorate of Education in Kavango East is currently hosting a stakeholders' conference in the Mukwe Constituency.
Shilima says the idea is to find solutions to some of the problems related to poor performance in the region.
“That’s why we are here today. We cannot afford to have many learners repeating grades 1, 2, and 3 while they are being taught in their mother tongue."

JUST IN: Telecom Namibia has announced the start of a strategic transformation and repositioning programme aimed at modernising its operations, improving customer experience and restoring confidence in the state-owned telecommunications operator following months of service disruptions and mounting customer complaints.
The company says the initiative forms part of a broader effort to reposition Telecom Namibia for long-term sustainability in an increasingly competitive telecommunications market, while accelerating digital transformation and network modernisation.
The transformation programme comes at a pivotal time for the company, which has faced criticism over recurring network outages, slow internet speeds and ageing infrastructure.
Telecom Namibia recently acknowledged that service interruptions experienced across the country were linked to ageing equipment, hardware failures, unstable international connectivity routes, as well as widespread copper theft and vandalism.
JUST IN: The continuation of the bail application of murder accused Petrus Kuume Shikwaya (21) was postponed to Wednesday, 10 June, after his defence lawyer, Murray Shikongo, was absent from court due to ill health.
Shikwaya, who is alleged to be implicated in the murder and severe acid attack on Ondangwa control prosecutor Justine Shiweda, appeared briefly before the Ondangwa Regional Court on Tuesday for the continuation of his bail application.
State prosecutor Yeukai Kangira informed the court that Shikongo was not feeling well. Shikwaya remains in custody pending the continuation of the hearing.
Shikwaya faces charges of murder with common purpose, conspiracy to commit murder, defeating or obstructing the course of justice, as well as a separate corruption and fraud case involving funds allegedly linked to Sanlam Namibia.
Shikwaya has denied any involvement in the crimes. During earlier proceedings, he testified that he was in Windhoek at the time of the fatal incident and claimed that his uncle, incarcerated former police officer Abner Mateus, used his bank accounts and properties without his knowledge.
