You’re watching a laser beam move in real time… at 2 billion frames per second.

Light only travels about 15 cm (6 inches) in each frame. That’s why you can actually see the beam crawl across the room, bounce off the mirrors, and come back.

Now watch carefully when the camera position changes…
The light going away from the camera suddenly looks slow.
The light coming toward the camera looks almost instant.
It looks like the speed of light is changing.

It’s not.

You’re seeing the finite speed of light itself. The camera is literally recording the PAST at different moments depending on how far the light has to travel to reach the sensor.

This isn’t CGI.
This isn’t a simulation.

This is a homemade camera filming actual photons.

A BBC interviewer asked a Nobel physicist the simplest question in the world: why do two magnets push each other apart. He refused to answer it. What he did instead is the best seven minutes on thinking ever filmed.

The man is Richard Feynman, at home in 1983, no blackboard, no notes, sitting in an armchair.

He does not dodge because he cannot answer. He dodges because he wants you to see what the question is actually asking. So he takes an ordinary sentence, that a woman slipped on the ice and broke her hip, and starts asking why, and every answer opens another why, until the ground gives way.

Then he turns it around on the interviewer with a question about ice that sounds trivial and is not.

The point he arrives at is the uncomfortable one. Every explanation is only a translation into something you already accept without explanation. Magnets have no such translation. There is nothing more familiar than magnetism to reduce magnetism to, which is why every answer you were given at school was a picture, not a reason.

It matters more now than it did in 1983. Any tool will hand you a fluent answer in a second. Knowing which questions actually have a bottom is the part that is still yours.

It would be helpful if we had some intermediate immigration statuses to combat this. Like:

Dark (of course.) one large cavern had a moving ceiling which was thousands (millions?) of bats.

It was hardly open to the public.

Long hike in to a very sparse camp. Small group of three people. You had to swim into the cave. Sketchy headlights (far from modern LEDs,) no safety gear other than a helmet; one guide.

Depth, you can't fake it. It's the depth of traditional structural masonry that allows so many lovely possibilities to emerge in a design. Imagine trying to achieve this in veneer!

If you are appointing judges, for example, the demographic sample for analysis should be “qualified experienced lawyers.”

Note that this is often WILDLY different from the general population demographics, especially wrt certain minority groups.

If you chat you get “Nate Villamar, product advisor” who is an AI.

AI is standard for CS chat, though it is still not disclosed that you are talking to (or emailing) an AI

Chat-Nate will refer you to a phone number. At which point you get Phone-Nate.

Phone-Nate is the same AI. Same repetitive responses. Same inability to answer complex or multipart statements.
