I flew out of Kyiv on the night of 22 February 2022 with one of the last flights. The airport was completely empty except for one crowded gate from where the Turkish Airlines flight to Istanbul was leaving late in the night.

There have been no civilian airline flights for almost 5 years in Ukraine.

For westerners to cry NOW about Ukraine possibly shutting down airspace for civilian flights in Western russia is peak hypocrisy and outright evil.

Ukraine closed its civilian airspace at 2:45 am on 24 February 2022.

It had to be done to protect civilian lives in response to Russian activity and threats, roughly an hour before Russia began its full scale war of aggression against Ukraine.

Since then Ukraine has had to keep its civilian airspace closed continuously. That’s 4 years, 6 months, and 9 days so far.

Unlike when the CIA director visited Moscow, enabled by Ukraine pausing some defence strikes into Russia, there have been no exceptions the other way that have allowed civilian air traffic into Ukraine, not even for the President of the United States visiting. Everyone has had to take trains and buses and other forms of transport, which by the way, Russia also attacks.

That’s 1,651 days of continuously closed Ukrainian civilian airspace, while Russia has been waging a genocidal war of entirely its own choice to erase the Ukrainian nation, continuously raining death and destruction upon Ukrainian homes, schools, shops, and hospitals.

That’s not even counting the eight years prior to this in which Ukraine has had to restrict civilian airspace traffic in its Eastern regions after Russia began its invasion 12 years ago, most severely after Russia shot down civilian airliner MH-17.

And now…

After all this…

It is very revealing how people respond to the required closure of Russian airspace.

It is required based on the fact that Russia chose to launch a full scale war of aggression that began severely impacting civilian air traffic more than 4 years ago.

Many of the usual “realists” or “Russia experts” who spent time as Moscow correspondents can’t help but reveal their imperial mentality here.

They actually think it’s unfair that a smaller country being invaded by a Great Power ™ is able to inconvenience its aggressor.

They are arguing that, despite Ukraine’s capabilities to defend itself, Ukrainians should continue helping ensure Russia can keep its civilian airspace open.

Absolutely fucking delusional.
