There is no final victory, as there is no final defeat. There is just the same battle. To be fought, over and over again. So toughen up, bloody toughen up.
Caroline Lucas has reacted angrily to Zack Polanski’s woeful campaign in Holborn and St Pancras and will not rule out asking him to step aside. I can’t say I blame her.
Polanski disgraced himself by more than tripling the Greens’ vote share from the last election, taking 33% in a Labour safe seat during Burnham’s honeymoon period. This was only the second best by-election performance in the Greens’ history. Every sensible person is suggesting that Polanski resign.
Among those sensible people is the former Green leader, who once nearly became prime minister by offering to form a coalition government made up exclusively of women and forgetting to suggest a single black or brown woman for her fantasy cabinet. Let’s be honest, who hasn’t forgot other races exist?
Caroline Lucas is the nation’s leading expert in not getting the Greens into power. I’m therefore honoured that she’s written this piece for her favourite establishment publication, Normal Island News:
It’s hugely disappointing to see Zack Polanski take 33% of the vote share in Holborn and St Pancras and turn the Greens into a serious electoral force. When I was Green leader, I had the good grace to only take 3.8% in that seat in 2017. Not many people know that I privately apologised to the Tories for exceeding expectations because 3.8% was far too high.
Our national vote share was just 1.6%. I accomplished this by making no serious attempt to engage with voters or make their lives better. Everyone who supported one of the other parties thought I was doing a brilliant job. Now, thanks to Zack, people who never liked the Greens are saying they wouldn’t vote for them.
In the past six months, we’ve seen Zack’s popularity go down among the people who would never vote Green—thanks to the type of media campaign that we only see when politicians threaten change.
This hate campaign is definitely Zack’s own fault. If he hadn’t threatened to change a system that’s not working for anyone but the rich, they wouldn’t be lying about him this way.
The Greens have a proud history of being a neoliberal party that pretends to be socialist. It’s supposed to mop up a few left votes so it looks like we have plurality, while making radical change seem unpopular. Unfortunately, Zack has convinced young people that change is possible because he is charismatic and genuinely cares.
Regrettably, the Green Party is no longer a safe space for Tories on bikes. One of my councillor friends was so upset by Polanski’s recent successes that he felt he no longer belongs in the party. Therefore he defected to the Conservatives—a party he was previously a member of until 2021.
Not only has Zack turned off the handful of Tories who pretend to care about the environment, he’s attracted voters who are supposed to be disenfranchised. As such I utterly reject him and everything he stands for.
Zack offered a serious challenge to a candidate that I never would’ve beaten in a million years. He’s pushing the government so far left that the Labour candidate even backed the nationalisation of Thames Water. There’s now a very real risk of sewage not being dumped on our beaches.
I much preferred the days when the Greens accomplished nothing and were rewarded with regular TV invites. Those invites have dried up for everyone but Greens like me, who are prepared to slag off their party leadership. It’s like the Corbyn years all over again!
Obviously, this is all connected to the fact that Zack criticises Israel. It’s highly illegal for the leader of a party in the UK to not support Israel. This is why myself and the rest of the establishment have expressed more anger at that “Zionism is racism” motion than we have at genocide.
Israel’s supporters have almost every other party to choose from and this is not enough. Israel’s opponents only have the Greens to vote for and this is one party too many.
Opponents of genocide don’t deserve representation any more than people who want affordable bills or a habitable planet. I don’t think I can forgive Zack for making the public think we are serious about any of these things. If the Greens’ poll ratings don’t collapse, I will have no choice but to demand his resignation.
Most of focus on the Greens' Zionism is Racism motion has been on its title. But it's worth reading the document in full: it is a comprehensive call for Palestinian liberation, authored by Palestinians
Political parties, trade unions, multilateral organisations and governments across the globe must immediately begin adopting the same policies. This document is now the gold standard - and the bare minimum

Synopsis
This motion defines Zionism, recognises its continued harm to Palestinians, and seeks to clarify that the Green Party is opposed to Zionism. It further affirms the right to self-determination and liberation of the Palestinian people and supports the establishment of a single democratic Palestinian State in all of historic Palestine.
Motion text
Zionism is a political ideology which called for the creation – and, now it exists, the continuity – of an ethnonationalist Jewish State in historic Palestine to the exclusion and/or domination of the non-Jewish population. The real, material manifestation of Zionism has been the historic and ongoing dehumanisation, displacement, dispossession, disenfranchisement and destruction of Palestinians. This is based upon European settler-colonial systems of domination and oppression, which has also created racial hierarchies between Jews of different ethnicities in Palestine.
CONFERENCE RESOLVES THAT:
1. The Green Party declares itself to be an anti-Zionist party.
2. The Green Party rejects attempts to normalise the racist subjugation and oppression of Palestinians; to equate anti-Zionism with antisemitism; to deny or minimise Palestinian human rights; to create hierarchies of racism; and to normalise or attempt to justify apartheid, ethnic cleansing or genocide. We affirm that definitions of anti-Jewish discrimination should not equate Jewish identity with Zionist ideology or political practice. As with any ethnicity or faith group, no single political ideology should be ascribed to an entire people.
3. Following from Motion E05, which affirmed that Israel is an apartheid State committing genocide, and Motion E07 supporting reparations and accountability, the Green Party supports the establishment of a single democratic Palestinian State in all of historic Palestine with Jerusalem as its capital, equal rights for all, and the right of return for Palestinians and their descendants.
4. The Green Party affirms the Palestinian people's inalienable right to self-determination, including the right of the Palestinian people to resistance and liberation from Israeli occupation, domination and subjugation, and acknowledges that the struggle to achieve that liberation by all available means under international law is legitimate.
5. The Green Party heeds the call from Palestinian civil society to impose broad boycotts and implement divestment initiatives against Israel similar to those applied to South Africa in the apartheid era, and calls upon the United Kingdom Government to impose full embargoes and sanctions against Israel.
6. The Green Party calls for the release of all Palestinian prisoners of conscience (including Marwan Barghouti), the end of the use of administrative detention of Palestinians by Israel, and the treatment of Palestinian combatants in accordance with international humanitarian law, including in particular those provisions dealing with prisoners of war in the First Additional Protocol of the 1977 amendments to the Four Genevan Conventions of 1949 relating to the Protection of Victims of International Armed Conflicts.
7. The Green Party calls for the removal of Palestine Action from the list of proscribed organisations in Schedule 2 to the Terrorism Act 2000 (i.e. de-proscription).
8. The Green Party calls for the release of all prisoners detained for non-violent direct action in support of Palestinian rights and the end of the genocide, apartheid and the illegal occupation of Palestine and supports the demands of the Prisoners for Palestine.
ACTIONS FOR THE PARTY TO TAKE:
The Green Party adopts the following action points:
This motion will be incorporated into the Green Party’s Record of Policy Statements as appropriate and promoted in accordance with our rules and procedures.
Zionism, as defined above, will be treated as any other form of racism.
We affirm our commitment to explicitly opposing Zionism in our internal and external communications going forward.
The UK and Welsh Parliaments, the London and Mayoral Assemblies, and Local Councils and Local Authorities must exercise their authority to end the genocide, occupation and apartheid. Elected Green representatives will continue to put pressure on all and any relevant bodies to achieve these goals. This motion ensures our positions comply with international law, equity, and our commitment to justice and human rights.
MPs, London and Mayoral Assembly Members, Councillors, and prospective Members of the Senedd should take measures at their respective chambers to create local, sub-national, and national action for Palestine, ending any investments in Israel; demanding peace and accountability, and an end to the egregious violations of international humanitarian law and the genocide conventions, and an immediate move towards accountability, reparations, and justice for the Palestinian people.
In May 1948, Egypt caught two Israeli soldiers near the wells of Gaza and accused Israel of trying to poison its water. At the UN, Israel's representative called the charge medieval anti-Semitic incitement. Israel called it a "wicked libel."
In 2022, the Israeli historians Benny Morris and Benjamin Z. Kedar published the IDF's own documents. The operation was real. It had a code name: Cast Thy Bread.
I served in Israel's Foreign Ministry and was an analyst in Unit 8200. I never heard of this operation until Haaretz published the files. This video walks through what they show: Ben-Gurion's diary, Yigael Yadin's orders, the wells near Jerusalem, the typhoid outbreak in Acre, the Gaza mission, the denial at the UN Security Council, and the officers who objected.
Israel has never acknowledged Cast Thy Bread. It has never taken back the words "wicked libel."
This video is part of what will be an ongoing series on Israeli lies and crimes. All the threads are linked in my pinned post on X.
