Our recent excavations at Fordingbridge revealed over 2,000 archaeological features, including trackways, ovens, enclosures, and 15 roundhouses! ๐
Among the many exciting finds was a rare complete quern stone. These domestic grinding tools were everyday essentials in Iron Age and Roman households, and only around 1% survive intact. This one lived a long life โfirst as a bottom quern stone, and then modified to be reused as a top quern โ only being placed carefully in a pit once it had truly reached the end of its working life.
We also uncovered other signs of domestic and economic activity, including a crucible hinting at nearby metalworking and possible evidence of nearby ceramic production, in the form of wasters and partially fired clay dumps.
๐๏ธ Come see some of the finds for yourself at VillaFest, Rockbourne Roman Villa (2โ3 August)!

If you've been following our community excavation at Brandier Farm, you already know Peterโthe Roman tile expert who can turn anyone into a tile enthusiast. Over the past three years, weโve unearthed 9.4 tonnes of Roman tiles, and now itโs time to reveal Peterโs top five favourite finds from the project! ๐
Oh, and exciting newsโour project has been nominated for Current Archaeologyโs Research Project of the Year! ๐ If you think our work deserves the win, ๐๐ผ๐๐ฒ ๐ต๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ฒ: https://t.co/FFOddR0i8b. ๐

โข The first tile we found on day one had to make the listโit even had โHIโ stamped on it! Well, it was actually upside-down and part of a broken โLHSโ stamp. But discovering this tile confirmed we were digging in the right placeโand marked the start of uncovering ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ด ๐๐๐ฎ๐บ๐ฝ๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐๐ถ๐น๐ฒ๐! ๐คฉ
โข ๐ฆ๐ถ๐๐ฒ ๐บ๐ฎ๐๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐! Say the people who found the second largest Roman roof tile found in the UK! ๐คฏ
โข The ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐บ๐ฐ๐ต๐ฎ๐ถ๐ฟ ๐๐ผ๐๐๐๐ผ๐ถ๐ฟ had to make the listโnot just because itโs fun to say! Most tile experts only encounter these in books, so discovering not one, but three complete examples was a total bucket-list moment for us! ๐ฏ
โข The tile with the ๐ฟ๐ผ๐น๐น๐ฒ๐ฟ-๐ถ๐บ๐ฝ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐๐๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐ฝ๐ฎ๐๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ป (not the typical comb). These unique patterns help link the tiles produced at Brandier to Roman buildings around Gloucestershire.
โข And of course, the ๐ง-๐๐ฝ๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ made the list. These unassuming but crucial finds were key to how the Romans produced tiles on such a large scale at Brandier Farm.

I may be a medievalist at heart, but my developing interests in landscapes, #EnviroArch, #geoarchaeology and #environmentalhistory mean that this @JICASJSY field school may tempt me away from my usual working holiday to Georgia (where I've been somewhat spoilt for 7 seasons!)
If this has whetted your appetite for Island Archaeology then consider joining us on the @JICASJSY Island Archaeology field school this summer.

@Bookishcrick I know this doens't help rn, but I've a couple of books on my list that I saw on your website in November/December, but as I've already bought 6 books this week (oops!), I think at least one of "your" books are on my "to buy later in the not-too-distant future" list!
It may be Saturday, but I'm spending my evening doing some #geoarchaeology reading whilst listening to (and totally not getting distracted by) @bushontheradio's #indiedisco on in the background
๐ถ you know you cannot hide from what's inside ๐ถ
@Bookishcrick Ah, sod it- as I read 3 of the books in my pile a while back and was mainly wanting to re-read them, I suppose I can get some more books...

Our excavations at #Thame revealed a story spanning the Early #Neolithic to Late #Saxon periods โ the largest known triple-ditched causewayed enclosure in the UK (!), #IronAge settlement and ritual activity, #Roman innovations, and #AngloSaxon weavers' workshops with charred remains that preserved their stories... ๐งถ
These findings are now available in two volumes, with photos, illustrations, and specialist interpretations from across the #OCAarchTeam, each detailing how Thame is a historical hub of life, change, and human resilience.

๐ฟ๐ For the snail savants and the shell specialists out there, welcome to Mollusc Mondays, where's Sophie's made a ๐ฉ๐ถ๐จ๐ฆ discovery!... ๐๐
๐พ Ok, so tiny shells like this might not look like much, but theyโre packed with clues about historical environments, climates, and landscapes. Our environmental archaeologists study these tiny traces to understand what people were eating, the plants they grew, and how climate has shaped the landscape.
And as some snail species only existed during specific time periods, their presence is useful for dating archaeological layers, turning these tiny remains into perfect little time capsules ๐ช๐โฅ๏ธ

Revealing stories from the building's time as an 18th-century prisoner-of-war camp, a cholera hospital, and later as a 19th-century workhouse, the site offers a glimpse into the lives of those who existed through challenging times in Bristolโs history.
Our team has been carefully working to record around 4,500 individuals, and bring their stories to light. You can read a bit more on the site, our ongoing analysis, and plans for reburial, here: https://t.co/JZZEtU3gGX
