Our upcoming training excavation at Willow House, next to Walmgate Bar, will explore the site of the lost church of St Peter-in-the-Willows 😮
We’ll also be searching for evidence of the English Civil Wars, like this musket ball found nearby!

🧱 Alert to all #Tileophiles! 🧱
If you've been following our community excavation at Brandier Farm, you already know Peter—the Roman tile expert who can turn anyone into a tile enthusiast. Over the past three years, we’ve unearthed 9.4 tonnes of Roman tiles, and now it’s time to reveal Peter’s top five favourite finds from the project! 🏆
Oh, and exciting news—our project has been nominated for Current Archaeology’s Research Project of the Year! 🎉 If you think our work deserves the win, 𝘃𝗼𝘁𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲: https://t.co/FFOddR0i8b. 🙌
🌟 𝗔 𝗤𝘂𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝗟𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗮𝘁 𝗣𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿’𝘀 𝗣𝗶𝗰𝗸𝘀:
• The first tile we found on day one had to make the list—it even had “HI” stamped on it! Well, it was actually upside-down and part of a broken “LHS” stamp. But discovering this tile confirmed we were digging in the right place—and marked the start of uncovering 𝟮𝟭𝟴 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗲𝘀! 🤩
• 𝗦𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀! Say the people who found the second largest Roman roof tile found in the UK! 🤯
• The 𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗿 𝘃𝗼𝘂𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗶𝗿 had to make the list—not just because it’s fun to say! Most tile experts only encounter these in books, so discovering not one, but three complete examples was a total bucket-list moment for us! 🎯
• The tile with the 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗿-𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻 (not the typical comb). These unique patterns help link the tiles produced at Brandier to Roman buildings around Gloucestershire.
• And of course, the 𝗧-𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘀 made the list. These unassuming but crucial finds were key to how the Romans produced tiles on such a large scale at Brandier Farm.
📖 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹 𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗹𝗲 to see the complete list of Peter’s favourite finds and their fascinating stories: https://t.co/QIuX5gu7Hc.
💬 What’s your favourite discovery? Let us know in the comments! 👇 And don’t forget to vote for us for Research Project of the Year! 🎉

When the greatest challenge on site is the heat 🥵, we’re staying safe in the shade, remembering our sunscreen, and keeping hydrated. An extra tea break with biscuits is just what we need 😂 #kelmscott2024 @KelmscottManor @SocAntiquaries #communitydig
