There is no African Team that has ever won this event in any international competiotion. And these boys said "Not on our watch".... History makers kwerrin 🇿🇦🇿🇦🥳🥳 #WorldRelays
@DumaGqubule São Paulo is v inspiring from a policy devt/inequality reduction /urban planning perspective. And then depressing for how it illuminates south Africa's complete lack of imagination or even interest in all these areas
Truth is, if you want society to be better for your child, you have to make society better for every child. Just focusing on yours alone won’t do them any good. It certainly won’t give them the type of society you want. All children are our children.
At @Complus2022 we've been discussing how community participation in primary health governance in India is loaded with gendered political economies - who should take the time to care and how? V much like the dynamics of social protection in SA and Brazil! https://t.co/C2qKIOhyAN
The COMPLUS annual meeting kick starts in the @cebrap office in São Paulo with teams presenting work so far, next steps and interesting cross country comparative discussions
Rest in peace Imaam Muhsin 🤍
Muhsin Hendricks, the world’s first openly gay Imaam and a South African queer icon and pioneer, was assassinated this afternoon after allegedly officiating a lesbian wedding in Gqeberha.
@nudgeitforward @Maluda012 If white people are being excluded then why, for as long as statistics have been collected, is the white unemployment rate the lowest of all population groups- persistently less than a quarter of the black unemployment rate? And why is the gap is widening?
A long post and a bit of a rant on why tech leaders like Jack Dorsey are frequently in Kenya and the lessons South Africa can learn from its approach to digital development. For years, South Africa’s lagging progress in this area has been a major frustration for me. It’s a real bugbear that irritates me to no end.
Kenya is not perfect, but it has firmly established itself as Africa’s Silicon Valley. It is know as “Silicon Savannah.” It has become a leading hub for tech, a reality that struck me during my trip to Kenya last year. I was gobsmacked by the progress I witnessed. As an anecdote I saw a billboard advertising insurance with a joke about ChatGPT. That that ad would have broad understanding by Kenyan consumers? A digitised society.
What has the Kenyan government done? It has made significant investments in ICT infrastructure and affordable internet access. Tech is a national priority. So much so it implemented Africa’s first coding curriculum for primary and secondary schools. Forward-thinking. The government provides various subsidies and incentives to support tech innovation, including tax holidays, deductions, and direct funding for startups and research. These measures are all part of a broader strategy to position Kenya as the tech hub of Africa.
As a result, Kenya is a top destination for venture capital investments and digital development aid. It hosts a significant share of Africa’s tech-related events and conferences. It is Africa’s tech hub.
As a result, Kenya has become a digitised society and an early adopter of emerging technologies like blockchain and AI. These advancements are applied effectively to tackle challenges in key sectors like agriculture, finance, and education.
As a result, Kenya is a logical choice for anyone looking to engage with Africa’s tech ecosystem. Its forward-thinking policies and collaborative ecosystem ensure it remains a leader in the continent’s digital revolution.
South Africa, by contrast, has much work to do. While I’m giving the new Department of Communications and Digital Technology a grace period, I am going to be such a pain if it does not begin to act decisively to create the conditions necessary for South Africa to compete with Kenya. It’s 2024, there’s no excuse for South Africa not being the tech capital of Africa. The focus needs to shift from tech solutions gimmickery and poorly conceptualised apps that lack meaningful utility. True digitisation requires well-thought-out, accessible solutions—apps for the South African public must be zero-rated, for example. That is a consideration that was not considered. It would have made more sense to leverage the near-universal use of WhatsApp for public platforms. 92% of SA use WhatsApp. Tech innovation cannot be lazy and uninspired slim pickings. It cannot be PR-focused and not public utility focused.
South Africa deserves so much better. Less squabbling within GNU. Less PR glitz that considers SA stupid. Less soundbite governance. More making an actual difference.
Rant over. Until the next one. 👋🏾
@eNCA Dan mentioned @Leon_Schreib. No! He's totally unreachable. Been approached by DHA officials for bribes to expedite my partner's PR application. Reported, no response. Then permit was denied after almost 3 years waiting. Partner can't live here. Appalling treatment at every level.
I recently met a man who told me he lived in the area where I rent but was relocated to Chatsworth during apartheid. What would his home have been worth if it wasn't stolen from him? This isn't something that happened centuries ago. It happened to people who are alive today.
@Sir_Zondi I'm still being flatly ignored by anyone connected with home affairs unless it's someone trying to bribe me to speed up spousal permit processing unfortunately
